Everton Appoint Unknown Manager
10th July 1999

81059

Everton have appointed an unknown manager, hours after sacking Walter Smith on a four year deal.

“Obviously we need to retain our position in the league this season, and push on and develop our exceptional talent and hopefully take this great club out of the ICU”, he said.

“Discussions with the owner have been fantastic. I am more than aware of the financial predicament we find ourselves in, so I don’t envisage any serious incoming players. We need additional cover in certain positions, but I don’t think we’ll be breaking the bank”, he added.

Everton have a pre-season tour arranged for Austria in the coming weeks, before kicking the league season off against Coventry City on the 7th August in a game that's already being billed as being a relegation six pointer.

Admira Wacker 1-0 Everton
21st July 1999, Bundesstadion Substadt

Everton were made to pay for missed chances as Austrian minnows Admira Wacker score late to grab a win in the Toffee's first pre-season friendly. Youngsters Michael Ball, Richard Dunne, Gareth Farrelly and Francis Jeffers all had key opportunities to score - but a 90th minute headed corned by Franz-Xaver Melzer was enough to see the English side off.

FC Tirol Innsbruck 0-0 Everton

A young Everton side were again wasteful in possession as a defiant FC Tirol defence did well to hinder any attack.

Bregenz 0-1 Everton
25th July 1999, Casino-Stadion

81061

Francis Jeffers' second half finish from a Peter Degn pass was enough to see off a defensive Bregenz side. Everton would feel annoyed that the scoreline wasn't higher as Kevin Campbell, Scot Gemmill and John Collins all missed easy chances to score in the first half. Veteran Dave Watson came off because of an injury, but is expected to be fit for the seasons start against Coventry City.

Everton 0-1 Coventry City
7th August 1999, Goodison Park

Goals: McAllister (6)

A wasteful Everton side start their season with a 1-0 loss to expected strugglers Coventry City.

Francis Jeffers was left on the bench for Everton, as they opted to play Kevin Campbell ahead of the promising young striker. Coventry City set out determined to stop any elongated period of Everton possession, with Richard Shaw being awarded a early yellow card for a pullback on Mark Pembridge after just 30 seconds.

A popshot by Gary Breen was poorly dealt with by Everton's Norweigan goalkeeper, and Mitch Ward was forced to put the ball out for a corner. Coventry took a 6th minute lead after Gary McAllister headed in a Noel Whelan corner, losing his marker too easily before nodding it right of the diving Everton keeper.

Everton would respond almost instantly as Scott Gemmill had a 20 yard shot go just wide from kickoff. Kevin Campbell's individual run was stopped by Marcus Hedman after 23 minutes.

Everton's best chance came 3 minutes later as Nick Barmby and Kevin Campbell linked up on the right to let Collins make a late run - only to put his tame shot wide from 4 yards.

A mix up between Coventry defenders forced Marcus Hall to make a clearance. A resulting Mitch Ward throw in led to confusion in the Coventry box, only for Campbell to shoot directly at Magnus Hedman.

After half time, Everton continued in their attacking intent - only to nearly get caught out on the counter as young Irishman Robbie Keane pulled his shot wide from 20 yards out after being put through by Carlton Palmer.

The Toffees made three changes, introducing Francis Jeffers, Don Hutchinson and Peter Degn for Mitch Ward, John Collins and Abel Xavier as Everton reverted to a 4-4-2 formation.

The changes almost paid off immediately as Magnus Hedman was forced into a superb diving save from 8 yards out from a Francis Jeffers shot.

Everton continued to pound the Coventry City defence with attack after attack, but fantastic saves from Hedman denied Hutchinson, Gemmill and Weir.

Man of the Match: Magnus Hedman, Coventry City.

Started playing Rimworld again.

God that game is beyond addictive.

Been replaying for about a week now, im on my 4th or 5th restart, bloody megaspiders, crashed ship parts and my favourite was the 10 mecha soliders that transport podded into the middle of my base when everybody was asleep.

On my current save I had about 5 groups of yorkshire terriers join my colony, had about 50 of them running around making mess and eating my food, managed to sell them to a trader, a mech raid came while they were outside and killed all the dogs and all the traders, it was a glorious moment.

Only problem is my people have seen a LOT of battles and have various body parts missing so its not going well, but you endure!
I recently came to the realisation that Rimworld is just The Sims with added organ harvesting.
Its a great game though.

Wimbledon 3-0 Everton
14th August 1999, Selhurt Park

81065

Goals: Gayle (11, 40), Badir (20)

The Wombles defeat a poor Toffees team in an indisciplined game at Selhurt Park.

Francis Jeffers makes his first start for the season as Thomas Myhre was kept in goal after his awful performance in the league's opener.

Wimbledon were fortunate to not be down to 10 men within 5 minutes as Kenny Cunningham made a two footed tackle on Nick Barmby. After discussing the incident with his assistants, referee Jeff Winter would only give the Irishman a yellow card and a stern talking to.

Within 3 minutes Richard Gough and Ceri Hughes would be carded after both players butted heads following a strong challenge by the Everton veteran.

Marcus Gayle was left free by David Unsworth on the left, and finished easily past Thomas Myhre to give Wimbledon the lead.

Everton were infuriated as Francis Jeffers' call for a penalty after a nasty tackle by Ben Thatcher was ignored. The resulting goalkick led to calamity in the Everton defence as Marcus Gayle forced David Weir into an error as he headed the clearance straight into Walid Badir whose first time shot passed the Everton goalkeeper.

Ben Thatcher was carded before half time for hacking Nick Barmby down nastily on the left.

After half time, Everton who had introduced Don Hutchinson and Kevin Campbell for Abel Xavier and Michael Ball were able to form chances of their own. John Collins' 30 yard strike went just wide of Neil Sullivan's goal on the 50 minute mark.

Kevin Campbell smashed the bar after some fantastic linkup play with Scot Gemmill, and from the restart a quick ball over the top onto the run of Francis Jeffers was wasted as the youngsters touch was too heavy and went out for a Wimbledon goalkick.

Another defensive mixup in the Everton backline forced David Unsworth to make a poor backpass to Myhre who was slow to react, as Marcus Gayle slid in and made it 3.

What would follow can only be described as a melee as David Weir, Scot Gemmill, John Collins, Walid Badir and Robbie Earle were all awarded yellow cards following bad challenges in a game that never really got restarted.

Tempers would flare for the last time as 2 minutes toward the end Peter Degn, introduced 20 minutes earlier to provide additional defensive cover for the flagging Mitch Ward, was sent off for throwing a punch at Michael Hughes.

A miserable day for the Toffees.

Everton's shaky defense was unable to contain a rampant Sunderland side, as the Toffees take a third successive defeat

Thomas Myhre and David Unsworth were dropped by the Toffees' manager in an attempt to resolve the defensive frailties experienced at Selhurst Park.

Things were looking up for the Toffees as Kevin Campbell took Everton into a 1-0 lead with a smart finish from a Nick Barmby cross from the left on 17 minutes.

Sunderland pushed on following the restart, and were able to equalise in just two minutes as explosive striker Kevin Phillips beat the Everton offside trap to finish easily past Simonsen in goal. Mads Joorgensen's sublime 30 yard strike was unstoppable. Richard Dunne failed to clear a Michael Gray cross, and the Danish midfielder was able to slot in for his second just before half time.

Everton reverted to a 4-3-1-1 after half time and were unfortunate not to score as Campbell's wicked shot cannoned off the crossbar after the restart.

Mitch Ward hacked Kevin Phillips down on 65 minutes, and after handbags which saw Kevin Ball and Michael Ball's names enter the referees notebook. Phillips calmly dispatched the penalty, to put Sunderland 4-1 ahead and end any hope the Toffees may have had after the restart.

Everton 1-0 Tottenham
25th August 1999, Goodison Park

81067

Goals: Francis Jeffers (44)

Francis Jeffers' clean finish was enough to give Everton their first win against Spurs at Goodison Park.

Steve Simonsen retains his place as Thomas Myhre was dropped completely from the first team squad as Dave Watson was reintroduced to provide defensive rigidity for the struggling side.

Allan Nielsen's 4th minute tackle on bright talent Jamie Milligan was enough for him to go into the referees book. Dave Watson's ball over the top was caught by Ian Walker who immediately dispatched the ball upfrield to Steffen Iversen whose first touch was enough to take him behind David Weir. His second touch however was poor, as Steve Simonsen was able to force him wide and make a save.

David Ginola run the park as Everton's deep lying midfield stood firm, but always looked like it could break open at any time. Darren Anderton's long shot from 30 yards narrowly missed on the half hour mark, and Chris Armstrong would be dissapointed to have not scored 5 minutes later as his tame shot from 5 yards out went wide an excellet David Ginola through ball. .

Milligan's early ball behind the Spurs high defense was taken by Jeffers who calmly placed the ball past Ian Walker and into the Spurs goal just before half time.

Richard Dunne was introduced for Scot Gemmil as Everton reverted to five at the back just after half time. Ruel Fox' introduction for Christian Bassedas followed suit as Spurs continued their onslaught, forcing the Toffees' keeper into a number of key saves.

Gareth Farrelly was brought on for John Collins as the Everton manager looked to add more defensive cover.

Goodison Park erupted into pandemonium as Everton battled valiantly for their first points of the season - pulling off the foot of the table.
