Fallout 76 appears to have fallen victim of the now common internet practice of burying a new game before it's even properly left the shelves..
The 'dedicated' group of 'super fans' decided that they really didn't like the idea of it, vilifying it and BGS so belligerently that it was picked up by news outlets and now has been, unfairly, labelled en mass as a 'bad' game.. despite many many people seemingly not having even played a single minute of it!
You can argue that the industry has been heading slowly towards self-destructive territory for a few years now... but the 'gamers' themselves certainly haven't helped.
I’ve played several hours of it and can confirm it’s pretty awful for the price range.
However, if they take a leaf from the ‘No Mans Sky’ book and use the world they have created (the only strong point of F76) as a basis for expansion and if they react to the criticism and improve from there, may be there’s hope of something decent emerging from it.
As I said, the world they’ve built here is great, there just isn’t much to do other than chasing quest markers around with little reward.
I’d suggest avoiding it for the moment and maybe picking it up at a later date when they’ve added some decent content and patched out most of the bugs.
