Computer games.

I don't really see why football shouldn't reflect society, and progressive movements forward towards equality, football has reflected society in so many ways throughout different era's, I realise we will have the usual 'pc gone mad' brigade out here, but I'm actually quite impressed with this move forward, as frankly football has been some distance behind other sports in normalising homosexuality, intentionally or not

I totally agree. So do it properly - normalise it completely; integrate it into the game as a default part of regen traits, or if your aim isn't to normalise it but to create societal dialogue, have the news article have consequences that broaden the debate.

Nonchalance isn't what I'd call it. Nonchalant was when Fallout 4 let you casually have a myriad of different relationships - not just monogamous - and didn't draw any attention to it whatsoever - it was just there. And it was brilliant. That's normalising an issue done right - it sent the message out that it's an RPG you play your way and you be you. Anyone complaining about the fact that you could voluntarily choose a gay relationship in that game would be off their rocker.

This though? This is a nothing action. It's marketing. To include something this important in how our society works and make no effort to have it make any commentary is irritating to me, but for some reason people can't understand my point of view on it when it's obvious to me. It would have been 1000x better if they simply had all regens have a set sexuality from a list of whatever many and presented it as "look, this is hear, everyone has a sexuality, including footballers, deal with reality" - that would have been absolutely amazing.

But a pop up song and dance news article with only a positive outcome - when the issue itself is clearly one of societal stigma - is a total missed opportunity and a crying shame in my eyes.
You say it’s for marketing so have the game producers used it in their marketing campaign at all mate? Or is it merely just a wee positive social commentary in the game for which there should not be any stigma or contesting about it?

Hope Football Manager 2019 tackles similar issues to Mark Sampson.

That's the next step to realism.
Yes this is the bigotry I was sort of referring to. Shouldn’t be any place in the game or excusing of that.

Adding openly gay players is sound, same as there being black players, or Muslims, or indeed any other group of people. Football is open to all.

I work in marketing... I know it when I see it. South Park didn't market that being black makes the game harder (was a joke in the end but clever commentary), but they knew it'd be picked up and widely spread when players and media got their hands on it.

This is the same thing - including something because you know it'll get headlines just before release, which for a product is the holy grail of marketing.

stumbled into this thread by accident, but: it is obviously going to happen sooner or later, so why not make it part of the game?

By all means. But do it properly. Give everyone a sexuality trait, give all real players the sexuality of straight, have all following regens have diverse sexualities. That would then by default highlight the ludicrousness of 100% straight footballers and make valid social commentary.

Or maybe they just included it in the game for it to be nice content mate. If they haven’t marketed it or commented on it when trying to sell it then good on them.

They may even get acclaim and a financial boost for something so innocuous. Mirroring the game really with that financial boost from the LGBT community.

Where’s the problem again?

Or just have the odd few footballers come out as gay in the game as it surely the case?

No biggy. You even get some extra cash for it, is right. I’d want as many gay players as possible.

Why don’t you mate?

um.... what?

you're an odd chap, if nothing else. but i'll grant that it's not as bad as your take on police murders.

is this game even out yet? do you even actually know how they handle it?

I mean, it's not exactly a game that requires marketing. Nor positive headlines for something that has a tiny % chance of happening.

It sells extremely well every year.

Yes, it's detailed in the article.

I don't know what was odd about what I just said. I'll try again.

If the game added a sexuality trait (which it currently does not have and, by the way, even FM18 doesn't add - it's just this news article) then if they made all existing players straight (because they all currently are apparently *wink wink*), then all future regens had various sexualities, then by definition it would highlight just how stupid the idea of "all real footballers are straight" is and would be great social commentary on the issue.

Exactly.

Yeah and no doubt has an influence on particularly the young generation (under 16s) so I think it’s a positive and responsible step in helping get rid of a stigma. Some of those young players will be gay, maybe even some of them will go on to be professional footballers.

You know the more I ponder it the more I like what they’ve done here.

I very much like how they went out and spoke to Robbie Rogers about it and got him to consult on it.

Didn't just jump and thought they could do it themselves. Consulted someone in the position and followed their lead.

Well in SI.
