Im waiting for @bullybeef to give his opinion
It's all about the "voice". Study after study has shown that people just prefer to hear lower pitched voices and tones. Even in women. This is also why people hate listening to recordings of their own voice. People think they sound in a lower pitch, when in fact they don't, and when they hear their own voice, especially for the first time, they hate it. And they don't realize it, but it's because it's in a higher tone than what they would originally perceive.
Add to that the fact that -- and I know this is going to sound sexist -- because any woman doing commentary (think Premier League, NFL, NBA, NHL or Major League Baseball) hasn't played at that level, it's just jarring on the ear of the majority of viewers, who just happen to be men. It just doesn't sound right. That in no way means there aren't women who don't know their onions when it comes to sports; I worked with quite a few in my previous career.
