Used to get the English paper versions off the marvel comics, Captain America, Spiderman, MarvelTeam Up,Fantastic Four as well as the American versions especially The Avengers, The Defenders, X-Men, Moonknight and Powerman & Iron Fist from the late 70's onwards, plus if if ever managed to see it the MAD magazine was always a great buy. And of the British comics I always got Whizzer and Chips, Buster, Whoopee and Wow until they all merged into each other as the Fleetway group attempted to save money. There was also a comic called Scream which was a horror one that lasted about 13 issues which i loved, still got them wrapped in plastic like a saddo.
Used to get the Beano only as an album at Xmas, along with The Beezer, Dandy, Shiver & Shake, Cor!, Monster Fun, Whoopee, Whizzer & Chips, Buster and any Individual ones like The Bash Street Kids album.
And on a Sunday one of the papers we'd get would be the Sunday Post which had its own comic section so Our Wullie and The Broons would be a must read, as was Andy Capp in the Mirror, would always get the Andy Capp books as well, ahhh the drunken wife beater he was/is...

Absolutely loved comics as a kid always thought it developed imagination with characters such as Cheeky, Paddywhack, Sid's Snake, The Numbskulls, Lolly Pop, Willy Worrier, Sweeney Toddler, Joker etc...
Oh and I loved the crappy free gifts, they were great, popping candy, frisbees, masks something for nothing was great imo

Dandy and Beano but there were one or two others. Radio Fun and I remember Champion. I wasn't too keen on Champion as it was all words and not many pictures.

Just started buying comics for my little boy. He really enjoyed reading a Beano is got him and we’ve now subscribed. Also getting him another comic called The Phoenix which has the benefit of no advertising or crappy plastic toys.
A quick look in my local supermarket and pretty much all the other “comics” are TV/celeb themed with cheap and nasty plastic toys on the front. They have precious little comic strip content inside.
Going back to the 1980s when I was a child there were still many to choose from: Beano, Dandy, Beezer, Topper, Buster, Whizzer & Chips etc. Unlike in the US and Japan, our comic industry seems to have sadly declined to almost nothing.
Does anyone here still buy comics for their children? Or what comics did you get as a child? I’ve just been helped my Dad collect old Eagle comics from the 1950s. Love Dan Dare!
Hello mate.

judge dredd was good.

It's popular with a few on here but Hellsing Ultimate as well

I went through a phase a few years back, where I bought first issues of magazine comics, I came across them during Lockdown when I was clearing out the attic, I'd forgotten about them.. I came across the Hedge Knight Sworn Sword issue 1.. limited edition cover. Looked at the author George R R Martin.. turns out it's a prequel to game of thrones, kind of hoping now that this will be made into a series.

My old man used to get me Roy of the Rovers for a fair while and I'd spend some pocket money on the Beano. During school someone showed me a few of the original Secret Wars and I became Marvel mad. Couldn't often afford them but loved to read Hulk, Spider-Man and so on.

I used to get the Beano or Dandy annual at Christmas.

Every now and then I'd get the comics. They both used to come out every other week on alternative week's I think.

I also remember getting The Real Ghostbusters comics for its short run.

I was never into superhero comics as a youngster but I've read them a lot in collected form since my mid 20's.

I always like Batman comics, The Dark Knight Returns and Knightfall being my favorites (they made an animated version of The Dark Knight Returns with Peter Weller voicing Bats that is an excellent reproduction of Frank Millers comic).

The other set of comics I really got into was Aliens/Predator/Terminator. Really explored the universe created for those antagonists in a way that was consistent and in homage to the source movies they came from. Excellent stuff, even today for fans of them.
