Coleman, midfield or defense?

Ihaters

Player Valuation: £35m
We have been flat on our right hand side for a long time, Coleman has provided a bit of a buzz but in general because he is on his own with Neville behind him, he is not that effiective.. Usefull but not as good as he could be..

For me I think it would be great having a similar type of RB to Baines, just to add some balance. Does anyone think Coleman can improve enough defensively to go to right back and would you have him there, or do you think he is just best kept as a quick midfielder?

Personally I would love to see him play the same as Baines and with the similar style of Ossy and Arteta.. our wide midfielders.. to link up with, we could have a great, balanced team, he just scares me too much defensively when the opposition have the ball in our penalty area.

Would you risk it for a few games or not?

I think eventually Coleman will play in a role like Baines does, but at the moment he has a few lapses in his defensive game (in my opinion.)

There is not a huge amount of old fashioned wingers in the premiership anymore, teams tend to end up with right and left midfielders instead, thus rely on attacking fullbacks such as Baines, Cole etc.... to provide a threat down the touchline and whip a cross in.

I feel we will see him playing the "winger" role this season and perhaps having a few stints as a fullback.

He's great on overlapping runs, players like Arteta Billy and Ossie love to see movement like that in front of them.

He can/has given away soft penalties with his rash tackling.

He can't really beat players in the sense that an out and out winger could, and his crossing is very poor.

However, he's great to have at Right Mid when the team needs to double up on a dangerous left winger (i.e how we shut Gareth Bale out of both games this season).

Tricky one to shout really, but in terms of assisting goals/scoring/creating chances i'd say he'd work better as a Right Back, bombarding opposing teams defence with his runs. Worked a treat in pre-season with Anichebe and Billy playing in front of him.

Potentially he could be a good, attacking right back. However everyone is constantly banging on about the need for pacy wingers - he proved last season he could do that job manfully. We have two more than capable right backs and no alternative on the right side of midfield.

Perhaps in the future, but for now it's a pointless exercise as it reduces our attacking potency on the right flank and means that Neville would inevitably be deployed in central midfield at the expense of one of our midfielders, probably Osman who was our best player towards the end of the season.

Accept we're going to play derivatives of a 4-5-1 formation, accept that Neville will play in that starting XI if fit, then work the rest of the side out with the players we have. Coleman at right back isn't the right move at the moment.

I would start giving him games at right back this season, but not against teams who have tricky wingers, I think we should slowly bed him in that position this year.

Right back.

He is actually quite ineffective at RM. I think people have been getting carried away. With the ball played to his feet, as it usually is at RM, he struggles to beat his man. But from the RB role, as he overlaps and gets played in, he can cause mayhem.

He gets stick defensively, but I think he gets too much. At one point last season I remember EB saying he had the best successful tackling ratio in the team, and his pace is a valuable asset for a fullback. And it's something which Hibbo and Neville can't match him at.

He's a poor replacement for a proper right winger, but for me, the best candidate to be our long term RB.

I think Coleman has an excellent role model in Tony Hibbert to be honest. Hibbert should help him with the defensive side of his game because, say what you like about Tony the Shoe, he has always been defensively sound and has tamed some really classy wingers in his time.

I'd also get Seamus crossing the ball at least 5 times every training session.

I think Seamus can cross a ball quite well when he tries. I mean I've seen him put in a couple of delectable crosses for Ireland. But he just seems to elect to pass it, or charge into the box, rather than cross it.

RB definitely. Would love to see him get a run at it the coming season. He doesn't have the guile to be a long term right mid imo.

To play regularly at RB he needs to improve, he is just too rash with some of his challenges and his enthusiasm to get the ball means he can be sucked in too easily by the more skilful opposition which can lead to him haring into another rash challenge.

I hope that with age this will improve and playing with Phil Neville he should also learn a thing or two.

RB eventually , just not now

I think his long term position is going to be right back, he done well first half of the season at right mid but there wasn't too many games in the second half which he had the same impact. This was proably because he needed a rest and with the big step up hes had in the past year, he was bound to have a dip in form.

I also think at right back he will get more of a chance to run onto the ball rather than having his back to goal and turning full backs when he plays as a right midfielder, that will probaly suit his game better as he likes running at the opposition and getting to the byline.

Seamus has a way to go at right back i wouldnt mind seeing him get oppurtuinites there, but as yet his defending, decison making needs improving. I have often thought Daveys relutence in playing him and Baines in the same team is down to physicality he likes a big back four, and he likes physicality/heit on set peices.

David Moyes believes Seamus Coleman will revert to his original position of right back over the course of next season.

The Irishman was a revelation on the right wing last term, winning the Club’s Young Player of the Season award and also earning a nomination for the PFA Young Player of the Season prize.

Coleman, who had previously shown his credentials as an enterprising full-back, was pushed further forward out of necessity, with manager David Moyes short of options on the right of midfield.

And despite the fantastic results, the Everton boss still sees Coleman’s long-term future as a defender.

Moyes said: “We have still got to see whether he can cope as a full-back in the Premier League, what we can say is that he can play as a winger if we need him.

“There will be a little bit of a change over next season as we will look to move him a bit further back and maybe he can develop into a right back.”

Moyes also challenged the former Sligo man to build on his breakthrough season and continue his development next term.

“In the first six or seven months of last season he gave us great impetus, he was the one we were looking to in spells,” he added.

“That fresh, real honest, just glad to be on the pitch approach was something I think the supporters recognised and appreciated. I think in the last few months he went off a little bit, I think after the last time he came back from international duty he did not come back firing like he was before.

“As I have said, sometimes there are things about Seamus when you can see why he was a £60,000 player and then there are other times you will look at him and say that is great business.

“Overall, his progress for us – from his loan move to Blackpool to coming back to us – you can see the strides he has made. He really has stepped up massive levels in a short space of time and we are hoping for him to keep that going over the coming seasons.”

1.) Thank [Poor language removed]

2.) That last comment about him being a £60K player is harsh!

In my opinion, Coleman is rather limited as a wide midfielder. He has one move and that's to dribble right at the defense. It worked well at first but now everyone knows that's what he does and it's not quite as successful. He needs to work on his crossing and being able to keep his head up when dribbling. He misses some wide open players at times due to concentrating too hard on his dribbling. Maybe develop a trick or two to throw the defenders off.

But the reason why he's playing midfield instead of defense is because his defending is a bit hit and miss. Can we afford to have two attacking fullbacks? That would be very dangerous in my opinion.

Ideally I'd rather have Coleman coming off the bench at this point. Either coming on at RB when we need a goal or at RM when we need someone with endeavor and pace to harass the other team. He's still only 22 so we don't have to make a decision right away. Maybe he'll develop more attacking moves or get more consistent on defense and his future position will become obvious. Either way, he should be a valuable member of the squad for a good long time.
