Coach/Assistant to manager

But taking that step up at the same club? Doesnt happen very often does it and when it does not very successful if history is to show us anything.

As an example - Shakespeare failed etc, but how many managers who weren't assistants have Leicester churned through before him and indeed post him will likely do the same.

Spurs had Tim Sherwood who flopped, but theyd also gone through 8 managers in the previous 9 years prior to him - and some of those highly rated at the time like Boas, Ramos and Santini

Closest to success I can remember is Garry Monk. Was a player not assistant/coach before becoming manager but seemed to do an okay job for Swansea. Managed them in the 2014/15 season when they got their record for premier league points. He also did a good job at Leeds last season. Not exactly inspiring but the best that comes to mind.

The top clubs in England rarely promote within , I don't know on one occasion that it's worked but I don't know of one coach that won the reserves league and promoted to the first team either.

With Unsworth saying all the right things and giving all Evertonians a warm fuzzt feeling again yesterday it got me thinking about youth team coaches, assistant managers of clubs that have made the step up.

I know De Boer at Ajax took a similar path for youth team to first team, Jose was merely an interpreter at Barca.

Can anyone think of any other examples where people have made the step up and it be a success?
Erm Bob Paisley.

Edit; Berti Mee, went from Physio to manager and won the double
