Howard Webb is the modern day version.
I remember that game well and the replay and also recall a time at goodison when he booked a 4 men in a wall defending a free kick when they never retreated to exactly 10 yards.
He also famously blew his whistle in the World cup when Brazil scored from a corner and disallowed it as time was up.
He loved the attention,just as the referee I mentioned at the beginning
 

He is definitely the template that horrible bar stewards such as Poll , Clattenburg , Collina and Howard Webb were forged from , they thought/think they are far more important than they really are .... The best refs are the ones you don't notice , A quality none of those numbskulls have ever had

I don't think that was Clive Thomas who booked four in the wall for not retreating back, that was Peter Willis against Nottingham Forest on New Years Day 1979
 

The Brazilians have fond memories I'd wager.
