Clapping Opposition Goalkeeper

I remember when Ipswich had a great team circa 1980 The came to Goodison and ripped us a new one.

They were winning 3-1, I think, when Paul Mariner crowned a great Ipswich attack by slotting a fourth.

There was the customary stunned silence for a split second after the opposition score but then the whole ground erupted in a spontaneous round of applause for the goal.

Re the goalkeepers.

Both EFC and the RS have been doing that since I started going the game in the late 60s.

I must say I never associated it with fans in any other region of the country but maybe I just neve4 noticed.

Remember that. Also remember a great solo goal from West Ham's Clyde Best which got a hell of a cheer. Gordon Banks certainly my got a hero's welcome in the mid - late 60's & after.

I remember Tim Flowers the ex Blackburn goalie saying Goodison and Anfield were his favourite away grounds to play at due to the respect showed to the keepers by clapping them. Suggests to me it's a Scouse thing and not done elsewhere

10 seconds of clapping then 45 mins of dogs abuse, standard procedure
(Only keepers who don’t clap back are Robles and Kasper the snake)
