I still had to drive my 12yr son home and try to appease him as he bemoaned that we're out of a cup competition. And that is what matters most to me.

So it's Naismith's fault? Or Everton's? You'd have still had to appease him if we got beat and Naismith didn't score.
As I said it wouldn't have been applauded if someone else had scored it's just moaning Evertonians venting again.

I would've clapped Mother Teresa, even more so given she's been dead for 20 years. Amazing, give her that sainthood now.
I think people only clapped because we've been getting used to winning and there was loads of time left. I don't think anyone would clap if Nais had scored the second goal in that match.

I think we need a bit of perspective here chaps and chappesses. It wasn't a league decider, it wasn't the final of the FA cup. It was the league cup, and for those saying it was an opportunity to win silverware, we've never won this cup and probably never will. We can't have everything I'm afraid. If we want a strong league and FA cup run, we can't do well in the league cup as well, we simply don't have the squad, that was painfully apparent last night for everyone to see.
An ex player got applauded for scoring? In the scheme of things, it's just not that important....sorry.

You're obviously evading the point, regardless of who scored I dont feel it appropriate to applaud if its against us. And I will never deviate from that opinion. As for the 'oh he's a jolly good fellow' love in , I can't countenance that in a competitive game.

I have to say I have seen some great goals scored against us, and actually clapped....now it isn't an over enthusiastic clap more a appreciative clap on seeing a great goal.
I think all last night was an appreciative clap more than a rousing applauding

Also I think him not celebrating the goal was a nice touch from hin

The RS is a total different story.. you can add both Manchester clubs to that, this being due to the intense rivalry. I've clapped numerous opposition's goals at Goodison. Perhaps I was brought up on the traditions of sportsmanship.

Isn't PC a more recent thing? a few of us on here have flagged up a prominent occasion 40yrs ago (Duncan MacKenzie) when this very same thing happened(If you read the whole thread), I was proud to have been part of almost an entire crowd that applauded a hero of ours that day, It's called sportsmanship and being respectful of someone. maybe it's something of a dying art rather than new fangled political correctness.

If you remember the stick some people gave Naismith when he first arrived before he showed what a hard working decent pro he was for me it would have been a simple task for me to applaud him had I been there.

I clapped, everyone around me did. It felt like the right thing to do at the time. That's been my standard excuse for most of the things I've messed up in my life...

He slipped, he scored, he didn't celebrate, we clapped, he clapped back. No one got the clap this time...

Haven't read read the whole thread, page by page so, apologies for that.

I also remember the stick he continued to get even after he'd shown he was hard working.
I admire his attitude, ethics and good will to others but, this wasn't a 'worldy' to be admired.

You mention Duncan, I'll prod your memory to when Paul Power, in an act of 'sportsmanship', didn't celebrate scoring for us against city, Howard Kendall rollicked him for it and rightly so.

This and the 200k donated to the Sunderland lad are signs of what makes our club special. I expect, that earlier most clubs would have reacted this way but the glory hunting has changed it. I am proud that we still do the decent thing.... hopefully we will be winning things again soon, I hope that doesn't change us for the worse!
