I can't figure out what it does or how to use it. I've tried putting discs in it but obviously they don't fit. I even tried yelling at it.

I got mine working by putting it in the microwave

I don't understand this gizmo at all - must be my age. Does it do anything that I can't already do simply by using a cable to plug my mac into the tv?

basically if you don't want cable you can buy one of these and then buy subscriptions to say amazon prime, netflix, hulu et al. Or you can use say a relative's who has cable log in and watch television that way. Its great if you don't watch sprots.

Yes. It means you don't need a cable.

I've found that its doesn't appear to be 'always on,' or so that th tv detects i anyway, so i have to do this

hit the tab to cast screen on tablet/laptop/phone so that they connect to the chromecast, select the correct hdmi on telly, 99% of the time turn telly off and on again.
it then seems to work.
better casting from phone or tablet than laptop though but thats more down to the laptop, and what i have to do 'above' is probs down to telly as i think that needs a software update.

other week I had a hd stream casting from mobdro on my phone to it and it was superb.
