As a youngster I thought Long had a really good chance of making the grade. He doesn't seem to have progressed as much as you would expect.
Even the loan spell with Brentford fizzled out last season , he was allowed back to play under 21 fixtures with Everton because he was not getting a game with Brentford.
He scored a hattrick in one game(I think) but finished the season back at Everton.
A permanent move to Burnley may give his career the push it needs , but ,if Everton really thought he would make the grade they would have
made sure he stayed.

Long was a decent talent in the academy and now has the opportunity to play at a good standard for Burnley. If he progresses well there he stands a chance of making it back to the premiership which would constitute "making the grade" in anyone's book.

I know a lot of people are comparing him to Kone but I am not convinced he was going to be good enough for us. He struggled to hold down a place for Brentford last season. How would people feel if we bought a striker who was a benchwarmer for Brentford, or Ipswich etc?

The club will receive a 7 figure sum for him (probably a million or so) and other benefits that may see a deal rising beyond that. We'll also have a sell on fee attached of around 25-35% I imagine. So if he is sold to a premier league club I would imagine we'll get another couple of million for him.

The cold reality is that figures we are discussing will go some way to paying for the entire academy system for a season. From a cold business perspective we have achieved what we wanted too and Long is a success story of the academy.

Long himself was a standout player in a decent youth team. Alongside Anton Forrester and Hallam Hope he was a potent striker but has like both of the above lacks that special quality to play for Everton. When I watch him, I feel he is almost there, but he is just lacking that wow factor that you want from a centre forward. He is a real number 9, but I just think he lacks that burst of pace that you probably need. He is quick, but he is not electric in the same way say a Walcott or a Sterling is.

This is a good move for him. For us there is a lad called Brewster who is similar to Long who is 17 now and to me has a bit more about him. Football is a ruthless business and Brewster is the next lad off the conveyor belt.

i think people are only mentioning kone because it has been proved beyond all reasonable doubt that he isnt good enough for us. people just wanted to see for themselves that long wasnt good enough either.

Well maybe. But Long doesn't become good enough just because Kone isn't good enough.

Shame. Seems a Forshaw-esque sale, where he could have had the chance in the first team ahead of lesser players but hasn't been given it. Kone seems untouchable at this point.

Still, saw nothing to suggest he'd make it at the level we're at. Let's hope the same fate doesn't come to other emerging talents like Ledson and Kenny.

Saw him play for the U21's at Sunderland towards the end of last season and he didn't stand out in the way that Galloway did. He was a class above the other 21 on the pitch.

havent watched the lad personally but think its a shame that e let him go so easy. Can't imagine that Mcaleney shown enough promise to get a new contract yet Long looked so under valued to be sold at the first sign of a transfer bid.

But oh well, i hope the lad does well, promising for a few years now so he's gone to a club where he will get a game and hopefully prove himself. as long as he isnt another austin/ings transfer for them then we should be resting a bit easier.

That's the point I am trying to get to. How do we know that Long is better than Kone. We can see Kone doesn't know where the net is but how many games in the PL has Long played in and how did he do. I know Kone isn't the answer but it sounds like we have let a gem go. Maybe Kone and Long are not good enough.
I know hes better than kone because i watched him closely for brentford good player shouldve kept him
