The England U20's is basically the players who can't get into England U21's ability wise
so what a certain Joe Royle was introduced at 16 years old - RM has disappointed me he talks the talk on our great younger players coming through , and sometimes insist on playing Dads army players, look at the lad Grealish in midfield on Sunday ripped LFC midfield to bits, made the two goals, Apart from Stones . and Barkley no one is getting a consistent run or even a sub appearance, playing ten at once was not the brightest idea in the Europa .
Now is the time in a few dead rubber games v lesser oposition to try Garbuut , Browning, Robles etc just on a odd game imo!

Grealish didn't make his first start til a fortnight ago so not the best examples

...I do think it's more difficult for a forward to come through because the skill set is so different. That's why they cost more. If they come through and establish themselves they have to be very good, can think of Vaughan and Anichebe as near misses since Rooney.

We need to manage expectation.

Looking at Kone it cannot be hard to better him!

.....good point, he's been a lucky boy being bought into the league. I stand by my point, though, that forwards are a rare breed to bring through.

its a pity duffus got a really bad injury, i heard he was making good progress and might have been involved with the first team before the end of the season.

Excluding the current first team squad , how many of our academy players from the age of ten up will ever in their careers play premiership football on a regular basis ?
If the answer is four or five then we have done quite well, more than that would be a very pleasant surprise and less than that would be a disappointment. But it certainly won't be every second youngster as some people seem to think.

Chris Long is a player I have always rated but it is by no means certain that he will be a premiership player. In fact the loan at Brentford is crucial because it shows he can do well at a high level. He has been unlucky with injuries but apart from that he has been impressive.

John Lundstram is an example of a highly rated player who has had to drop way down the divisions to find a level he can play at currently.

I think that players from eighteen to twenty go from talented youngsters to professional footballers and most do not make the cut.

RM cannot throw every promising youngster into the first team because most will never be good enough. Grealish is not a good example as he has been highly rated for several years and most clubs would have been only too glad to sign him.

personally think that would be a absolutely crap return. we have 7 currently playing in the premier league from last 10 yrs or so and have put a lot more resources into it recently.

Long is more suited to number 10 role when we want another striker so is probably battling with Naismith and ahead of McAleny. Unfortunately his chances may be limited as Martinez tends to like midfielders like Barkley and Osman in that role. If he could play wide maybe an opportunity would open up for him. Duffus looks more of a number 9 so if we keep him on and he recovers well from injury he may be ready to take Kone's place as 3rd choice number 9 when his contract runs out at end of next season. I hope we get another number 9 this summer.

Going on loan gives young players good playing time, it has to be better than sitting on the bench and snatching 10 or 15 mins.
It will help him improve his overall game, and this has to help his future

There's also Henen, and maybe even the young Irish lad we signed from United at the start of the season.
