wasn't sure where to include this, but right now I'm watching (or trying to) an old recording I found soon after the FA cup final victory, it's actually the opening day game at Chelsea (1995/96) , Toffees line up in white as follows, Southall, Barrett, Watson, Unsworth, ablett, Limpar, Horne, parkinson, Hinchcliffe, Ferguson, Rideout, referee is Mike Read.

this was recorded on the day of the game on a now antique VHS, and the color is awful, it's like a watered down blue and yellow and southall has on a very distinctive jersey, I haven't seen this for years but know that it finished 0-0, Ferguson missed a couple of absolute howlers, Limpar looked really promising at the time, and we were waiting for Arbitration over the much anticipated Kanchelskis transfer.

This was about a week after the Samways Charity Shield win over Blackburn and hopes were high, there was certainly the plausability to do well in the cup tournaments, maybe even retain the cup (Ferguson misses a dreadful open goal there), and even be dark horses for league honors, no need to go on here, we know what happened, the season effectively ended with a defeat to lower league opposition in the FA cup, even just missed out on a UEFA cup place on the last day.

You can tell it's a really sweltering day in the capital from this, short sleeves everywhere, shorter hair, Limpar with a neat barnet, and it's now full time. 0-0

this is also the day when Manchester United lost to Villa, and I've seen it, and Hansen makes his famous 'you'll never win anything with kids' remark, and there must be very few people who had the live recording of that, Lineker looks really young here, and all the talk is of Ruud Gullit making his big Chelsea debut but we do get a mention.

Lynam, "Everton look as though they will be as difficult to beat as though they were towards the end of last season"

Hansen " they didin't play well on the day, but they had four of five decent chances, I always think thats the mark of a good team, you can go away from home first day of the season and get a result, and Kanchelskis to come in, good player"

Just thought it might be relevant, I like watching my old Everton recordings, did anyone go that afternoon.

and Matthew Le Tissier, arguably the countrys most skillful and flair player at this time, hat-trick on opening day, he was amazing.

Ha ha the memerios - i remember thinking what excellent signings Samways, Barret and Kanchelskis where and was gutted we didnt get Collymore or Chris Armstrong. Tony Grant was also going to come through and be the next big thing.

I always think when it comes to talking about good players at Everton Andes Limpar doesnt get enough credit, watched the 95 Cup Final the other night and he was outstanding.

That season was the last time we beat Arsenal away. Hope it's an omen

I have the match of the day league recording against United from '95. The Ferguson goal from the corner where he left Keane for dead and buried a header past Schmeichel.
He put Bruce on his arse a couple of times, won everything in the air and totaly out powered their back four.

Alan Hansen was asked "who he'd least like to play against Ferguson or Zola" he replied "Ferguson, he's to strong and powerful, unstoppable in the air and good feet for a big man a complete centre forward".

Could'nt wait to go back to school and tell everyone that Ferguson was better than Zola.

Collymore was some talent but lost his way sadly

Faddy he was but beating up Ulrika (not that bad a thing:D) didn't help him and the swopping cars in car park sex clubs was also a bit of downer, he was his own worswt enemy mate. That said some of his analysing on Five is very good

I feel kind of selfish here.

It's been quite a day for Everton with regards to events north of the river and I will reply to that in due course when I am able, but I wanted to start with my own thread and someone mentioned Collymore.

Quite appropriate too, as on the same day as Toffees labored to a hard fought 0-0 at Stamford Bridge on the opening day of the 1995/96 season, Collymore back then, was the transfer of the season, as Liverpool paid either £6 or £8 million for his services from Nottingham Forest and we was the talk of the transfers that summer, he scored the only goal of the game as reds beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 at Anfield with a quite stupendous goal but never really lived up to the hype.

someone mentioned that Stanley beat up Ulrika (Johnsonn) that wasn't quite the case,. what actually happened was Collymore and Johnsonn were in a pub in Paris during France '98, Ulrika wanted to leave, stan didn't and some fisticuffs ensued, Collymore was reported to have lashed out and the romance was effectively over, but still a fine player.

The Collymore tranfer from Forest to Liverpool was the biggest news of summer 1995, but it never really worked out.

Or was he at Crystal Palace, damn, one or the other, it's 4.30 in the morning, so excuses can be made.

also, after the Everton draw at Chelsea we played Arsenal at Goodison in mid week and lost 2-0, I think Ian Wright may have scored, maybe David Platt, I was really downhearted after that night.

someone mentioned Ravanelli, I remember this like yesterday, In think it was the summer of 1997, Middlesborough had been relegated, and it seemed for weeks that Fabrizio was on his way to Goodison, Royle was no longer manager, Kendall was about to come back for a third time from Sheffield United, and all the pre-season speculation was of Ravanelli coming to Goodison and Andy Gray being the new manager after Royle had been sacked.

Gray turned down the position to stay with SKY, Ravanelli snubbed any move, and kendall came back, and had survived by a hair on the last day against Coventry, but then made way for Walter Smith.

and yes, as someone said 1995/96 was the last season Everton beat Arsenal away from home, it still continues. :@

going to bed.

Was this also the summer of the Chris Armstrong saga, Everton bid £6million for him, but palace turned it down and their chairman said it was because Palace are a bigger club than Everton and he should stay with palace. He then went on to sign for spurs and did nothing except for a hat trick against us, i still hate him and his spot!
