wasn't sure where to include this, but right now I'm watching (or trying to) an old recording I found soon after the FA cup final victory, it's actually the opening day game at Chelsea (1995/96) , Toffees line up in white as follows, Southall, Barrett, Watson, Unsworth, ablett, Limpar, Horne, parkinson, Hinchcliffe, Ferguson, Rideout, referee is Mike Read.
this was recorded on the day of the game on a now antique VHS, and the color is awful, it's like a watered down blue and yellow and southall has on a very distinctive jersey, I haven't seen this for years but know that it finished 0-0, Ferguson missed a couple of absolute howlers, Limpar looked really promising at the time, and we were waiting for Arbitration over the much anticipated Kanchelskis transfer.
This was about a week after the Samways Charity Shield win over Blackburn and hopes were high, there was certainly the plausability to do well in the cup tournaments, maybe even retain the cup (Ferguson misses a dreadful open goal there), and even be dark horses for league honors, no need to go on here, we know what happened, the season effectively ended with a defeat to lower league opposition in the FA cup, even just missed out on a UEFA cup place on the last day.
You can tell it's a really sweltering day in the capital from this, short sleeves everywhere, shorter hair, Limpar with a neat barnet, and it's now full time. 0-0
this is also the day when Manchester United lost to Villa, and I've seen it, and Hansen makes his famous 'you'll never win anything with kids' remark, and there must be very few people who had the live recording of that, Lineker looks really young here, and all the talk is of Ruud Gullit making his big Chelsea debut but we do get a mention.
Lynam, "Everton look as though they will be as difficult to beat as though they were towards the end of last season"
Hansen " they didin't play well on the day, but they had four of five decent chances, I always think thats the mark of a good team, you can go away from home first day of the season and get a result, and Kanchelskis to come in, good player"
Just thought it might be relevant, I like watching my old Everton recordings, did anyone go that afternoon.
and Matthew Le Tissier, arguably the countrys most skillful and flair player at this time, hat-trick on opening day, he was amazing.
