Change of style next season?

Haven't seen enough of him to say tbh. From what I have seen he's more industry than artistry.

I can't see Barkley being as bad as he was either. His passing was dire last season. He should be better which lessens the need. Who knows, even Gibson may get himself fit..
Barkley played a lot more throughballs last season than the one before. I think with a mental break Barkley will be back. At least now some of the pressure is of him.

I'd personally like to see a "win at all costs" approach.

If we can do it playing silky smooth footie then great - if not, we should do whatever is necessary to win.

But how do we know what style is most likely to win games?

The manager usually chooses to play either possession or long ball football because he thinks it is more likely to produce a win from the players available in his squad.

Despite improved results, the West Ham fans have tired of Sam Allardyce's style. Would you really like Sam Allardyce to take over from Roberto?

I'm not advocating route 1 Allardyce football at all.

The phrase 'mix it up' has been used to describe the '80's side, meaning that we could play teams off the park if required, or we could also use muscle when required.

Suit the style to whatever is in front of us. One style won't work against every single opponent unless you are the best team on the planet (which we were in '85 but that's another matter).

I understand now!

But you have to build a squad to play in your favoured style. When you adapt the team to another style for a particular game, it will not be as practised or proficient in a different style.

Clubs are restricted to the players available in their squad. Bigger clubs, of course, will be able to afford bigger squads.

I think Groucho simply means that Martinez should be more adaptive (like Mourinho) and less stuck in the "Everton" way (what Wenger and Pellegrini seem to do).

That's fair enough. And Martinez was more flexible as the season progressed, though he never abandoned the two defensive midfielders.

But when you are building your squad, you either go in search of an Andy Carroll or, say, a Danny Ings. That kind of signing will define the way you set out to play.

You can, of course, tailor the team to specific games. You can play McCarthy, McCarthy and Barry or McCarthy, Barry and Besic!

4-6-0

For me "style" is less about what system we start the game with than our flexibity within the game to change as necessary. Particularly our ability to counter attack quickly. There were a number of times last season, mainly later half, where we counterattacked quickly and scored/ had a shot at goal. At times it has been painful to watch us getting the ball back unexpectedly then tiki-tikka it square and back before moving forward, when by then the opposition is set up again. Ross in particular has shown that one of his strengths is picking up the ball and counter attacking quickly. More of it please Roberto.

I wonder if the fans will change - and decide to cheer the team next season.

From the very first home game, the singing last season was minimal - long before the pattern of results unfolded.

I thought we played better as a 4-3-3. I think Barkley looks lost as a number 10 at times and has to be full of confidence to play it. At the moment I'd play him deeper. Have McCarthy/Cleverley getting box to box as well alongside him.

pretty much got to be a midfield diamond now.

Barry/Besic
McCarthy--------Clevelino
Barkley/No10
I'm pretty sure we're in for a No10 and there's no way Barkley or McCarthy aren't going to be in the first team. So either Barry or Cleverly will need to be dropped. My guess is Barry will be dropped. I do however think we will play that diamond against the top 6 teams especially away from home.
