Change of style next season?

For those hoping for a new formation, the fact we have signed one half of the cleverly sisters and that Martinez is a tactical knob, it does not bode well.

I'm thinking this as well. Cleverley will be shoehorned into the side come rain or sun shine, and the same ineffective style which had everyone bored to tears last year will once again be implemented ad nauseum. As you said, it doesn't bode well.

Martinez showed without doubt that he does have tactical skills in his first season.

The way he chooses to play depends upon what he thinks he can achieve. Last season his choice was limited by injuries, a limited squad and a lot of midweek games. He should have more resources this season.

And the Sunderland home game was a great tactical success - we made chances and dominated the game. We didn't win because we didn't score, which is a different matter.

Citing one game is not enough though. We were outplayed and the fans bored to tears many times last year. Resources or not, the style of football played and the tempo deployed was crap.

And as for not scoring enough goals....

There's a difference between saying you think Martinez would play him rather than whether you think he should play.

That said I think he's a decent player. I just don't like the formation we'll play with him in the team unless someone leaves.

He'll probably be the first name on Martinez's team sheet. As you say it could be down to the formation we play to accommodate him, because I can still see Barry and McCarthy being Martinez's middle 2.

Agree he's not a bad player, his form towards the end of the season with Villa was very good.

When playing the "lesser lights" at Goddison, there is no excuse for playing any two from McCartthy, Barry or Besic.

I think this us something he needs to address come August.

Majority of teams in the world play 4-2-3-1 and it's the most boring formation I've ever seen in my life. I would only advocate that formation - or even 5 at the back - against the big teams. Prime example of it's failings - and Martinez's reluctance to be flexible - was Sunderland at home. Completely dominated that game yet played with two defensive midfielders?

Agreed - one game doesn't prove whether tactics are good or bad.

Martinez has shown since Christmas that he is quite capable of introducing different tactics for specific games. Let's see what he delivers in the new season before we condemn him.

Will Martinez persevere with the same play for his defenders? Pressing from opponents has made playing the ball out more difficult. And opponents have been exploiting the space behind the attacking full back, despite Barry dropping back into the back line.

It doesn't matter whether it's
4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 or 5-4-1 or whatever it's how you tactically instruct the players to play in any given formation.

On paper both chelsea and arsenal appear a 4-2-3-1 yet neither side play like us and have 2 DM sitting silly deep playing meaningless slow passes!

Imo we need only the one holding cm in most games and again imo that should be McCarthy with besic as the backup.

His signing of Cleverley leads me to believe nothing will change from last season and he will use him either from the left in pienaar's absence or as the supposed missing playmaker/No.10 (which he is not)

RM will just prove his cluelessness and be gone by December!

Personally 4-2-3-1 is not negative to me. I think increasing the tempo moving the ball quicker getting Barkley running past players to break teams who are sitting deeper. This season has been to slow and pedestrian.
Making 4-3-3 won't make much difference if we still have the same tempo.

I could go on but in a nutshell it's having that tempo zip about our attack. Added to players who are going to drive forward and take responsibility. Prime example of this type is (hazard) without him Chelsea would look half the team

Part of the problem as I see it is that we need greater leadership on the field, and leadership and drive should not only come from the captain. Looking back to our more successful days there were leaders all over the pitch driving the team on.
