Don’t get me wrong, UEFA were the most threatened by this. They ought to have been strongest on it, but they are such a toothless organisation - and so worried about protecting their golden goose - that they’d do whatever they could to get these clubs back on board without upsetting them.

Ultimately, I agree. Punishment is cathartic, but what matters is preventing this from happening now or in the future.

They are weakened, as you say. This is exactly the time to put new rules (or even better, laws) in place to permanently ban breakaway competitions outside of the game’s governing bodies.

Fine is in euros so its only about £80 million or 2 and a half Iwobis
