Champions League revamp

Can the 14 of us not just start our own league and play some togger?

We probably could. We functionally could do it by kicking them out.

It would cost all 14 clubs a ton of TV revenue, so they'd all have to figure out how to bridge the financing gap to cover the wage bill until existing player contracts come off and things normalize.

If I'm reading UEFA's coefficient rules right, it would cost us our CL spots. I'd have to look to be precise, but we'd probably be down with the Scots, or worse, as far as access was concerned.

In short, it was a lot more viable with UEFA on the warpath and potentially willing to give us an assist than off it.

They never actually left though, which I imagine is going to be quiet important if it goes to court, their lawyers will also have considered all this prior to them making the move to leave

Think the poster meant they could be sanctioned by the ESL for withdrawing, rather than sanctions from the PL.

No idea if that's likely though

Lol it was not planned all along, what a ridiculous claim,

You think Ceferin was acting this whole time ? You think egotistical billionaire owners humiliated themselves in public and alienated their fans on purpose as part of some grand masterplan to improve the champs league ?

Exactly this. EU Clubs wanted in on PL money, 3 PL Clubs wanted to take the oppotunity to create a franchise system, and the other 3 clubs just didn't want to miss out. It's not surprising that it was City & Chelsea who were the first to withdraw, they weren't invested in the plan and just didn't want to get left behind.

UEFA wouldn't have gotten any flack for the new change anyway, as its still a minimal change. They didn't need it to force it through at all.

John Henry has apologised to the club's supporters for the "disruption" caused by the proposed ESL.

Henry has taken sole responsibility for the "unnecessary negativity" saying: "In this endeavour I've let you down"

He went on to say "The project put forward was never going to stand without the support of the fans"

The bit I find a joke is him saying it was never going to get through "without the support of the fans" if that was the case then why not put it to the fans in the first place before signing up for it instead of being deceitful and secretive about it all.

I know RS fans are dim as ****, but surely even they can see how hollow his apology is.

I hate this whole stance of don't punish the teams because the manager / player / fans don't deserve it.

Yes, they don't, but the owners of these clubs need to know in no uncertain terms that they can't just repackage this idea in a few years time. Let's say a points deduction makes most of the 6 finish a few places lower and even make some miss out on Europe, that'll hit their owners where it hurts most, their wallets.

Remember, they always see what they want to see - as long as they see themselves as 'relevant' they would sell their grannies into slavery at a whim.

Absolutely sickening - I wasnt massively bothered when it was announced tbh but I'm raging now at the revisionism.

I'm pretty much done with football at this stage. I love Everton but cant be arsed with the swamp of football and football journalism.
If there is no punishment then they can do anything they want in theory.

When the owners put in place the conditions for winning then it’s fine for the players and fans to enjoy all of that. But when they mess up the players and fans shouldn’t be punished. Unless you’re a non top 6 club and then that’s perfectly ok. Next people will be saying it was unfair that clubs got punished in 1985 for the actions of some fans from another club, oh wait....
