Champions League revamp

20 point deduction, £50m fine apiece.

Loads of ways to punish them. Loads of clubs have been punished far more severely for much less.
Point deduction for next season sounds feasible but that would have to come from the premier league. UEFA wouldn't want that.

£50 fine? Mate that wouldn't impact the owners at all.

It is such a poor argument. The premiere league was bad for football, we all know it. But that doesn't mean we should be allowed to keep doing it on repeat in a race to the bottom.

If you think money alone is what is ruining football then the PL was very bad. But if you think competition is what makes football, then it is still reasonably competitive and the jeopardy is still in place. The PL is not, and never has been, a closed shop. There are former PL teams in the 4th tier.

There were some pros of the PL era and football has improved in some ways - stadiums, coverage on TV, training facilities and arguably the standard on the pitch has improved (my Dad would not agree!). There are no pros to the ESL concept, other than if you are an elite club owner.

Wont happen until the 14 others stand united - every other 14 fans should let their feelings known outside our grounds about it but we wont as we are just grateful the Saints Six have returned to us like battered housewives.

The most uncomfortable interview goes to:

John Barnes Talksport

They've gotten their way now though.

The one thing I will say is that I saw so many ex-players come out and condemn this, Neville, Wright, Onouha, Richards.... I saw supporters groups come out and condemn it, including all the Liverpool Fan groups (and rightly so), but I didn't feel convinced by Carragher, and the rest are all carefully treading, almost as if they're afraid of speaking out.

John Barnes spent the entire time on the defensive there. Why on earth is creating a league, which is inclusive for all, the same as creating a closed, by invite only competition? It's genuinely been Arsenal/Liverpool fans excuse towards us the whole time.

It's done, isn't it? No punishments, no problems.

It would if the insinuation was this is for a first offence, next time it's £500m apiece.

They need punishing. All of this means nothing if they aren't.
Spot on mate, I just don't see what is feasible. If I was a getting man I'd put my money on this being brushed under the carpet by the beginning of next season. The games done.

If they are not punished the whole PL governance will look weak and they will be vulnerable to another attempt down the road.

Our clubs stadium plans were nearly bombed out of existence by this lot.

Surely these clubs have hefty pounts deductions incoming? Or will they just get away with it?

What are fines going to do?

Man City are literally governed by a state. United/Arsenal/Chelsea/Liverpool are all behind billionaire owners. a £20m fine wouldn't even touch the surface.

For us in England, the clubs need to make a stand and make sure that a fine simply won't do, but that's it now, the media spinning has already begun, and now they're all heroes again.

They must face the consequences of thier actions. And it must be done in a way that will make them think twice next time. Because if we do nothing, there will be a next time

I keep hearing variants on the argument that to deter this behavior in the future, we must punish them now. That's simply not the case.

When the league rules that prohibit the behavior and specify sanctions don't prevent the behavior in a situation like this, what you have is a failure of deterrence. Either they didn't believe the threat would be carried out, or they didn't care until circumstances changed.

It's possible to rewrite the rules in such a way that leaves the clubs no choice but to take action, or renders the action trivial. If every club had to stump up 10-20% of the annual wage bill as surety against such behavior, or the TV money were paid out lagged up a year and the funds in escrow were automatically forfeit in the event of such action, the clubs involved would have thought twice about this.

Punishing them for this isn't necessary for the threat to become credible. That's really about our notions of justice, rather than trying to establish a credible detterent threat. In general, when you start talking about needing to apply sanctions for reasons of credibility, you've already lost the next round. Truly effective sanctions are never actually applied - they're designed creatively enough that they prevent the problem from ever arising.

Has anyone checked in on Paul Merson? Genuinely interested in the insights his penetrating intellect can provide.

Like the time we 'ruined' football by signing Richarlison. Well, the transfer window. But you know what I mean. So God knows what he makes of this.

Lol
