Our friends from glasgow, Celtic fans, ask me if Everton are a catholic based club with Irish links or a protestant if any at all. As Liverpool is very similar to glasgow, i.e big irish community (bigger than glasgow) and a big protestant community. So do the football clubs mirror the religions of this city.

We have no wish to be tied to that separatist nonsense .Those days are gone and good ridence I say.

in a word, no.

both religions are represented by supporters of both teams.

it's a question that pops up every now and again, but the clubs distance themselves from religion whenever questioned about it.

The split was aways more about party political and moral issues than sectarian.

Houlding and his cronies were Tories and brewers, Mahon and the majority of the board were Liberals with heavy involvement in the Temperance movement, the rent issue was a factor, but it was more the catalyst to a bust up that was always brewing (pardon the pun).

I remember during the '80's the RS fans used to chant Celtic and we used to chant Rangers. We've had a lot of dealing with Rangers in the transfer market as well. I always thought we were the protestant club but as has been said our religion IS football so it's not that pronounced. A lot of families are mixed RS and blues as well so it's not religion based as to what team you support in Liverpool.

I see Sharpy has covered it, its the other way around mate.

FFS, can we have done with this once and for all: Everton the Catholic club; Liverpool the Sikh club. It's not too hard to remember.

Neither , nor . Like our City , its a bit of both .
However , as a " Left - Footer " , I would point out to any syncophantic Celtic Fans during their next R.S. Love-In , to check the Rapid Final DVD and check how many Celtic hats and even scarves there were .
As I say , I'm of that persuasion , but I watched it recently and was struck by it .
I know they were popular at the time . But they sold both sides, and all I saw were Bhoys ones .
True dat .
