Can we beat seventy two points ?

If he'd have beaten it by four points it would have been good enough.

Yes, league position is all important. But big points totals are the only thing that will get CL footy. There's been seasons when less than 72 points got you in (even less than 70). But we are not getting near even that sum.

Best two attempts to run up a big total by us in recent memory have been 65 by Moyes and 72 by Martinez. The Moyes CL spot finish on 61 points was the freak of all freaks and never to be repeated.

If he has beaten it by 18 points we could have been champions.

Again it doesn't really hold much ground to say 72 points is a bench Mark for managers when it clearly isnt. You say the 60 odd season was a freak occurrence right? Is it not more credible to say Martinez getting 72 points was a freak occurrence based on our entire premier league record to date?

There is also the point that you held some expectation that koeman could outperform the money clubs with a squad of players that you have been critical of in the past and by selling half the squad in January? You can't have it both ways mate. You can't hold a manager to a crazy expectation whilst being critical of the players he has at his disposal.

Paid superstar manager wages? You better deliver superstar results.

The 72 point season was the high water mark, and if we're to seriously mount a challenge to the top four we better be looking to surpass that total rather than looking at the insipid points total we ran up this season. To do that this manager has to become a lot bolder against big teams at home and everyone else away from home. Can he learn and do that? Let's find out next season.

I doubt it's gonna happen for us unless we get at least 4 or 5 superstar players in on superstar wages as well though. I doubt any manager could get us consistently finishing top 4 without it and very few would achieve it as a one off either no matter what their salary is.

Getting us top five though is not unheard of.

He gets paid twice what the previous two managers were paid.

It's not unreasonable to demand he gets us to the position they each managed.

It'll be disappointing if during his time here he doesn't get at least 5th but right now I think all the teams who finished above us have better squads and unless one of the top 6 has an off season next season or we sign much better players then I think he'd be doing very well to get 5th.
