I am looking at picking up a new digital camera.

Currently looking at an Olympus Evolt E-410

http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1294

or a Canon Digital Rebel XTi 10.1MP SLR with a 18-55mm Lens

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=14256

If push came to shove, which of these two would you get, and if not, why not? Is there any other camera's out there in the price range I should be looking at? I could research this, but I am tired, and hopefully I can identify some amateur photographers out of this (I used to do photography as an idle hobby, but I used my boats super wham-a-dyne camera that had all the bells and whistled, and I never learned anything about it.) to talk with

Chico, hold any girly website ideas comments to yourself ;) :P

I'm a Nikon man myself, but at that price point it's probably a matter of personal preference. I've been debating getting a Nikon digital body to go with the lenses for the old F90X (N90S to you) I have but, to be honest, I almost always use the pocket digital (Coolpix S4) these days since I am mostly on the move when I am taking photos. The D40, D40X and D80 are the ones I have been looking at on and off.

If you are keen on photography you probably already know about these sites, but just in case here are some from my bookmarks:

These are near Mt Tambourine, Sydney Harbour on a shoot, and the first town i lived in, in Oz, Copacabana.

It's hard to beat Canon and stock Canon lenses. Nikon's are very nice as well and there is always 3rd party lenses, often the best bet anyway. You also need to consider if you want a full frame camera or not too.

Let me find my fav camera review site. I think one of the newish entries has stabilization built into the sensor and not the lenses which can be nice. There was an oldish Canon (5D?) that I really like as it could do everything.

That powershot is a great bridge camera, don't rule it out.

got to say i'm a Nikon man, use a coolpix 2500 for snap shots, only 2mp butfuckin amazing quality for an old low mp camera

In a world where information overload can be a problem this site is somewhat refreshing in it's ability to help choose and select a camera.

And take it back, I think the 30D was the Canon I really liked (5fps burst!)

I own a Fuji S6000fd btw and am happy with it. I felt that a bridge camera was a better start for now and if I stick with it maybe a SLR for my 50th, they'll only get better and cheaper.

I "grew up" on Canon (the old AE-1 Program) and the assorted lenses. Don't do as much these days and have a Sony digital camera that does well.

On a side note, I saw a recent review for Nikon's latest and greatest camera.

Costs about $5000 USD. Looks pretty cool though.

FCC, that is a brilliant site! Looks like I might just go with the Canon Rebel XTi (sounds like a cheap 80's Ford Escort......the XR3i anybody :P ) I can get a great deal on the Canon and a lens. Although, the Minolta 5D looks a great camera for the price.

Thanks all for the input, it is GREATLY appreciated.

Swings and Roundabouts.

I am now currently looking for a new camera.

I've had the SLR Canon 450D since about '08 and now I might go back to something simpler.

Recommendations ala 2014?
