We are ****e at defending setpieces (without Cahill) this season. He was always the first to head the ball away.

Defo this. Our defending of set pieces seems to be falling apart because no one is attacking the ball, and taking on the role that Cahill played.

Cahill highlights against Oman.

I think it was the right time for him to leave but I do agree we miss his defencive work at times. His talent is to pop up out of nowhere and attack the ball. Felli can't hide, the whole stadium knows where he is.

Oh FFS, he's gone, he went because the time was right for him to kick on and make some money in a lesser competition. Australia were dire against Oman last night, they should have anihilated them, Cahill did what he does best but it was against a team that would struggle to win a Premier league game.

Agreed, but I did a bit of 'thread necromancing' just to highlight he can still get the job done. Indeed, he should've had 3 goals last night.

It's not so much that I want him back but, as HK toffee implied, we seem to have no succession strategy. I don't mind the fact that we let him move on, but did we replace him, or his role, in the team. Yes, a number of players have stepped up, but one size does not fit all.

I really don't understand this.

Fellaini has scored more goals this season than Cahill ever did in one season playing for us. His biggest asset was his goals and Fellaini has already bested him there, while also being the superior player in almost every other aspect of the game.

We haven't 'replaced' him, we've put someone there who is superior despite that not even being his natural position.

I hope they make it and he has a good tournament, just so he can close that part of his career out on a good note. Let's face it, he's their main threat...which is a bit sad on their part and why he's not bothered going back there to "help". You can't help those who won't help themselves. You can tell in certain interviews that he doesn't think very highly of the way football's set up in Australia, particularly in the youth area.
