Tradition is important, but realistically a Saturday makes travel much easier.

does it? boxing day is a bank holiday so the same people who get saturdays off because they work mon-fri, will also have boxing day off

It matters if you’re going to Burnley to support your team, there aren’t any trains on Boxing Day. Obviously the club coaches would run but you’ve still got to get to Goodison.
