If so many loonies who frequent the various political threads on GOT here are against them, then the royal family are plainly doing a fine job, so consider me a royalist.

I've no issue with this. I'd prefer them putting the money into sonething like Buckingham Palace than on say sprucing up the residence of an unelected PM.
The point is, Toffee, we should not be spending tax payers money on either.
If our Head of State residence needs work we should do it. We should cut the money given to the lesser members of the royal family and cut their money for heading off on jollies. We should certainly not cut budget on things of global renown like the palace. As I've already said I think the Queen is sound. My opinion could well change after her successor comes. But I've no qualms currently .
I expect the Queen, and to some extent the entire royal family, have little say in refurb works on the palace and other royal residences. There'll be some sort of government commission that deals with all that.To be honest I doubt the queen is even arsed about the palace getting done, this will be william and kate getting the place sorted for when they move in, the work is gonna take 10 years to complete can't see liz and Phil still knocking round then
She doesn't need 5 palaces. I am anti monarchy, it is the epitome of the class system. Elect a President and give him/her one palace.
I in terms of royalty think she's a very good figurehead.
