Well done to billy joe saunders, speaking as someone who tipped eubank to win as well, saunders really has seemed to sort out his stamina issues even if eubank is a slightly lazy opponent. More than anything tonight, despite all its critics I though tonight was a huge indictment of the amateur game, and the superior ringmanship and skills that led to saunders victory acquired from a distinguished amateur career. All is not lost for eubank, he has talent, now if someone could just teach him what a jab is, he will get somewhere
I have to admit, Eubank Junior did better than i thought he would but i think that was more to do with size and strength. you could argue that a boxer who would be comfortable super middle fought a boxer who could make light middle.
Anyway apart from a decent uppercut i didn't see anything what would suggest Eubank JR wil be a star, he jumped in with his punches, he thought in straight lines, his footwork was clumsy at best (i know you can catch feet with a southpaw but he was just stumbling forward). his slipping of punches was basically ducking his head down so low that he should have bee warned by the ref. You can only get a way wit such poor technique up to a crtailevel. The only thing that made the fight close(ish) was his superior size and strength.
BJS on the other hand put on a technical boxing master class, his footwork and angles in attack and defence were brilliant to watch.
The best thing eubank JR can do is go home and buy a BJS boxset and try a learn some ringcraft.
As you can tell i was a little impressed by saunders.
Oh and split decision, what a joke.
