Box-to-box Midfielder

i go along with the ross shouts as well. As long as he has a a defensive mid behind him to sweep everything up (either barry or gueye) - he certainly has the engine and attributes to play box-to-box, with hopefully mata in front. Would be very strong, He just needs to work a bit more on the defensive side, but we could go with a bit more defensive formation in the bigger games.

exactly, this two dm thing isn't set in stone, with two dms they both have to get forward, with one dm he can devote himself full time to holding the line allowing ross to rampage up the field - I think that's how we'd get the best out of him

Agree. Would be perfect if the opponent would not know if we play Ross as number 8 or number 10. Similarly as Mata - will he play as number 10 or a wing, will we play two strikers or only Big Rom or with one or two DMs. Tactical versatility is an absolute key. To both Ross and the team as whole. Was imo one of the biggest problems under Martinez - our opponents knew exactly what is going to be our game plan. This is hopefully gone with Koeman.

in the ideal i'd envision mata as a sort of forward anchor, able to supply slide rule passes to lukaku and the wingers and hold the ball up when on the counter, as well as providing an option when wings run down blind alleys. with a decent DM you could have bolaise/miralles and del wreaking havoc down the wings, ross providing the 1-2 with the runner and mata to go back to while forward, while still having 5 players back for defensive duties should we lose the ball

teams either have to double up on the man with the ball leaving themselves open to runs from unmarked players, or go compact and be vulnerable to a well placed pass from mata or ross

covers a lot of ground, has size for the position, does have a positive catnip test

That is my ideal plan in my mind as well. Would be probably too offensive away vs better teams though - so we could then likely go for double pivot Barry-Gueye and play the offensive trio Mata, Barkley and Bolasie + Lukaku, would work ok defensively if Barkley really starts to give it all defensively and offensively as well - a maestro and a runner like Bolasie next to Barkley could be perfect support cast for Lukaku. Similarly a variant of 4-4-2 could be possible as well: Mata-Barkley-Gueye-Bolasie could work if we buy a good striker to play together with Lukaku (or maybe even Deulofeu could play there).

Anyone mentioning pivot or double pivot should be slapped until they put down fifa and fm and switch off whatever tactical analysis sites and shows they've been watching.

Never worried about Reid and Bracewell being pivots blah blah blah, they where just boss midfielders.
