Whinchats were certainly seen locally when I was a kid. There numbers have dropped dramatically since then though.
I don't think I've (knowingly) seen one since the 60s, but as you say they may be one of the many "little brown blobs" that we all see.

An ant on the tree trunk.

There were three of them, but this is the only one I could get anywhere near to because of the shape of the tree.

Summer migrants here, live on Moorland and Heath’s.

Lovely little bird, quite easy to get them confused with the Stonechat.
