Nordecke

Player Valuation: £35m
For those who don't know who Mark Schlereth is: He is a former NFL player (Meat head) ..

Alot of debate recently in the NFL about illegal hits and so forth, possibly taking alot of contact out of the game to protect the players blah blah blah..

Well this douche says earlier that (if) "you take all the contact away you're soccer" ..

First off douche bag, there is plenty of contact in soccer, contact which usually leads to far worst injuries.. But that's not why I'm mad..

We all know that NFL and soccer are two completely different sports. For example, in soccer one must run for miles during any game "without breaks" unlike the NFL which has a commercial every 30 seconds..
My point is, this guy said without contact the NFL would be soccer, It was a deliberate Jab at soccer just so other meat heads can get a laugh and agree that soccer is a girls sport and everything else.. It's no different than a youth coach screaming at kids telling them if they "can't take a hit have Mommy sign you up for soccer"..

Anyways Rant over.

Take the physicality out of Rugby League and you've got Union
take it out of Rugby Union and you've got gridiron

Mate with all due respect, football isn't a contact sport it's is a collision sport. If you've never played, you have no idea what you're talking about. I still have health issues from playing my whole life (Knees, back, multiple concussions). This whole Rugby is tougher cuz they don't wear pads is complete BS. Every kid in America plays tackle football in the yard or street without pads just like Rugby. You don't tackle the same way. You can't. A kid from Rutgers University just got paralyzed from the neck down last Saturday. Sadly, although fairly rare, it's not that rare.

The violence in the NFL and college football is getting scary simply because the players are so much bigger and faster than they used to be. It's like being in a car collision multiple times every game. TBH as much I love (American) Football, if I had a son I'm not sure I would encourage him to play these days. That's not a diss at Soccer, it's just a fact. Soccer players may get leg injuries just as much, but not head injuries for the most part.

This is a really good article from Malcolm Gladwell of the New Yorker about this subject. It's pretty sobering. http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/10/19/091019fa_fact_gladwell

I agree smashing a defenceless reciever helmet to helmet is very scary and needs to be removed from the game.. again not arguing the argument on the NFL side.. My beef is with this arseface who called out soccer for no real reason..

I don't get upset at that. I used to be hater and now I love it. People can change, but some won't. Ever. He's entitled to his opinion, but on the other side you have guys like Chris Fowler and Mike Tirico, who are both closely associated with football, hosting the World Cup coverage on ESPN and doing an amazing job.

Soccer is a contact sport, but it's not like football nor should it be. I think the NFL has a very difficult job ahead trying to legislate the violence out of the game.

If not immpossible..They promote the game threw best of vids, and big hit vids, and on those vids are the exact illegal hits were talking about.. I agree though something must be done.. I was thinkning : Remove some of the pads, or make pads and helmet less effective.. you say the kids are getting faster and stronger, no doubt, but I have noticed that every year the hits get bigger and bigger and it's because every year the equipment gets better and better.. players aren't afraid to fly in and lay a hit right now cuz they know the equipment will protect them.. It's a false sense of security really.

No, I don't think making the equipment "less" safe is the answer. It's a fundamental problem that humans that weigh as much as pro football players do and move as fast as they do are going to cause more injuries than they did in, say, 1965 when the average offensive lineman weighed about 230 pounds. Now it's like 330 pounds.

I don't know if you played Nordecke, but if you didn't, it's hard to describe what emotional state you have to put yourself in to play football at a high level. You literally have to be 2 different people. I'm the most laid back guy in the world (and I was when I played too), but once I stepped on the field I channeled aggression that would have landed me in jail off the field. It's almost like a "kill or be killed" adrenaline rush. There's a lot of thinking that goes on during a football game (a lot more than non-football fans understand or give credit for), but at the same time it's seek and destroy. You are literally trying to inflict as much pain on your opponent within the rules as you can. It's a drug. I can still vividly recall the best hits I ever had and it pumps the blood just to think about it. Hard to explain. But that's why it's tough to remove that from the sport. It's conditioned and the sport weeds out those who don't have that gene.

Yea I played all through my youth, up to highschool.. (then dropped out of HS) was very good at the game and still play with friends. I understand and know the game very well.. In fact as you said earlier you were a hater of soccer once.. as was I.. Football was my life I lived and breathed it. Couldv'e coached it.. My local town has a semi-pro team and I would do it had I not f*cked my knees while serving.

My point about the helmets and pads would be the players would ease off a bit knowing that they weren't protected "As" well.

Yeah I wrecked my knee too between my junior and senior year and ruined any hope of getting a college scholarship. I thought about walking on somewhere, but going through rehab was such an arduous process that I just didn't have it in me to go through all that again.

Even though Schlereth is a former skin I still don't like him. But you do have to be tougher to play American football than soccer. Could you see Torres playing american football?

I still shudder though when I think about Joe Theisnann's injury. I even remember what play it was - Fleaflicker or something. Snaaap.

Me too. Just seeing LT's reaction is enough to tell you it was bad. It's not often you see someone that injures another player act like LT did.
