2025/26 Beto

Thought his header was collosal - really unlucky it got saved.

Maybe a more refined player places it but hey, here we are.
His head was utter junk. He had the whole goal to aim at and he decided to aim it at the keeper. He owes Grealish a huge thank you. If Grealish didn’t have the thought of mind to put a block in, there’s absolutely no way you’d be saying this. He’s garbage.

How can he have aimed it at the keeper if the keeper is moving?

All these arguments about it being a poor finish are based on a scenario where the Palace keeper is standing still, he isn’t though, he’s moving back across the goal.

So Beto has to make the run, time his leap, and direct his header downwards with power. Now he’s supposed to also anticipate how far across the goal the keeper might be able to get back in time?

Ultimately if Beto doesn’t do any of those first four things there’s no goal.

To be fair he smashed it, had a ton of pace. Except for it landing exactly where the keeper's foot was going that's a goal - like 98% of the time. Usually when you head the ball down that sharply it's nearly impossible to save. Yes, he "could have" aimed it a little left, but in that case you bring on more risk it glances off your head wrong, and in a situatino where if you smash it virtually anywhere on frame it's a goal, I can't really blame him on this one

Let’s be clear though, if he hadn’t managed to head it at all it would have been absolutely appalling forward play. It was a cross that almost landed on his head ffs. It was a poor finish, I think it’s pretty weird to claim otherwise really. It wasn’t shockingly bad, but he headed it almost dead centre of the goal, you hardly have to be mystic Meg to realise there’s a decent chance the keeper is going to be in with a chance of saving it there like.

A poor finish is not being in there, heading it over the bar, or not connecting at all. They are poor finishes. Heading it with full power down into the ground is a decent finish. Yes he didn’t power it into the far corner but it’s really not as bad as people are making out.

I’m sure you’d have said the same if it was gueye that did it.

My issue with Gueye is with his sloppiness in possession. Beto is equally sloppy in possession to be honest, but neither of those things have anything to do with Beto’s part in the goal. It’s a decent powerful header on target and downwards which means the keeper has to cough it back up into the danger area.

If that's DCL missing that header he's getting absolutely demolished by the fans. As you say, if it hadn't have ended up in the net the fans would (rightly) be fuming with him - imo.

One thing I can applaud him for is finding the space and at least getting a solid connection on it, which prevents the goalkeeper from parrying it into a safer position.

Hopefully the fact that it did end with a goal can give him some confidence - and we all know he's the superior option to Barry, who looks like he's miles off what is needed.

Bit harsh, he headed it down which is textbook and the whole goal to aim at is a bit of an exaggeration

Congrats on your placing in the top 5 clueless posters rankings. It was a brilliant header full stop.
