2025/26 Beto

The problem with Beto is that a striker of his ilk just isn't sustainable at the top level anymore. You can't just be a goal hanger or poacher in the format he is. You need to be way more involved in the game. No team can afford having a spare part in the team for the majority of the game. Every player on the pitch matters. It's just not sustainable to rely on him getting that one through ball a game or one cross that he can poach because it's not like he's a prolific striker that scores every chance anyway. Seems like a nice bloke but we gambled on that purple patch and it was wrong to.

Barry just needs to start from now on as he's a better footballer that is capable of getting involved in the game more. Just needs a bit of confidence.

It's weird because he even seems to be struggling putting himself about now. It's like teams have figured out how to completely nullify him.

He's offering very little and I'm not sure what he can do to change it
Think your right about teams working him out
Leave him alone and his dreadful touch will give you the ball
Surely they have worked with him on his control

It is strange that he has such a complete fall off in form.

It isn't as if he was a better footballer last season but he seemed to more energy and enthusiasm.

This.
I thought he'd grab this season. Never with the quality of play. But as a handful. He did show it last season. Palace away last season he was just a complete pain in the arse for their very good defence.
Disappointed in him so far.

Teams have figured out that all you need to do is defend the space between the back line and the keeper and he's nullified. It's why we can't "play to his strengths."

We should be playing to the strengths of the three behind him anyway.

I actually think the reason hes struggling is because we are doing better. Hes best suited to playing on the 2nd best team, on the counter, running in behind. Hes at his best doing that, as it gives him space, enhancing his strength(speed, strength, finish) and minimizing his weakness(control, touch).

With us now having more dominant possession players in Grealish, KDH, Dibling, Ndiaye, teams just sit back against us and pack it in, and they spend a lot less time with the ball outside of our box. We have less opportunity to counter and the striker has less space. Id suggest hes a victim of our success because hes just not a fit for that style of play.

Yep, this, there's no space for him to run in behind because the quality of our midfield puts teams on the back foot, and Beto hasn't got the smarts to link up.

Hes still wouldn’t be good enough if we were a 30% possession counter attacking team

He's probably not good enough for this level, but showed glimpses in games last season.

Even if you're not playing well/feeling confident, you can run yourself ragged and knock the centre halves around a bit. Make yourself a handful.

He's not even doing that.

I might be wrong but I think he's still sulking from criticism Moyes gave him pre-season.

Never a good idea imo.
