Didn't DCL score before getting injured last time out?

I get the justified criticism DCL's received but Moyes will 100% get more out of him than Dyche ever did as we clearly play to striker's strengths and he'll also go on scoring runs. However, on merit, Beto should be starting even if DCL was fit, he's just proper in form currently.

Truth is we don't know if both won't go cold for months, which is what the problem is. They're both prone to inconsistencies or dry spells, where if you miss 1 your head goes; Beto seems to be better at having the "miss one, go again" mentality at least, so the mentality is there, the skill sort of backs it up, which is great to see.
DCL did score before getting injured, and after another run of games not scoring.

We know DCL will, Beto is having his first run of starts since DCL came back from injury the season we signed him, so we will see between now and the end of May whether he`s just had a purple patch or not

I was genuinely surprised he missed all 3 yesterday. I'd have backed him to put 2 of them away.

1st one was dreadful.
2nd one, maybe the first one was on his mind. Keeper had his legs so wide open it was just begging him to pass it underneath. Wasn't in the corner and was too high.
3rd one I think he telegraphed where it was going a little too much, but credit the keeper for standing tall.

Not sure why Alcaraz was so upset he didn't square it as he would have needed to weigh the ball perfectly.

He had Pinnock on toast 3 times and in return their keeper had a motm display against him

Wolves back line is also terrible so he'll have some joy against them I reckon to get back on the goal trail.

If your going to miss 3 big chances, do it against the likes of Brentford and not the likes of the rs. Those types of misses against that lot and your remembered forever for all the wrong reasons ( Barlow, Madar)

Of course he had a poor game,
He’s a striker his job is to score goals, he got rightly praised for 5 in 4.
If Pickford made 3 world class saves, then threw 2 into the net, would you say he had a great game ?

Sometimes it can be in the middle, not everything has to be a one word analysis of bad or good.

Thought his link up play with Alcaraz was spot on, they seem to have a bit of a connection there. His hold up play was moderate, at times I thought he lost out a bit too easily but over the course of 90 minutes was generally good.

Obviously, he is a striker and is paid to score so the 3 misses will cloud peoples judgement but I would say that lowered his performance to an OK, rather than all the way down to bad.

Made the wrong decision for the first, the second the keeper stood up well but in the end did not execute the shot well at all and maybe should have gone low through the legs. The third, I thought he made the right decision to put it out of the keepers reach but just couldn't quite do it.

Think we won't know if it's a purple patch until next year - Jelavic looked like a boss slotter too for 6 months  My point was that Moyes will get DCL scoring again anyway, as evident by doing so in, what, his first proper game back with us?

I dunno, hope Beto finds consistency and scores more going forward, solid striker, has decent PL-level qualities, can slot, is a nice guy to boot. Maybe DCL's time/grace period with us is over anyway, which isn't unreasonable. I suppose we'll have targets lined up for next year as we're very thin in that department (along with many others) and we'll weigh pros and cons of keeping DCL in the next few months or going for someone new. I'd say it's suicide to go with Beto + Chermiti as our only two options, but is DCL the answer to this? No idea.

Its a weird one. On one hand he has shown last night spectacularly on many occasions good awareness when a race is on with the defenders and also shown he has excellent pace for it.

But that finishing was turbo Dominic. Maybe he was too confident that everything he touched turn to goals. Also keeper was good.

Anyway. Moyes will have him working on it.

I think what people are saying is that for all 3 chances he got the ball a long way out and used excellent pace and guile to get into the position to create the one on ones. Not every striker would have been able to do that, they would have mistouched it along the way and been caught up by a defender or something. That's where the praise is coming from because he was very direct and did very well to get into them positions on all 3 occasions.
There is no way Maupay even gets a shot off with any of them situations

Even Tosun had a run when he first came in. And that was in an Allardyce team that went several games without a shot.

5 in 14. A goal every 198mins. 5 goals from 19 shots with a shooting success % of 26.3 (higher than Betos 22.2).

I’m hoping Beto can keep it up which jelavic and tosun didn’t. I don’t mind him missing chances yesterday, all strikers miss them, even the very best. It’s less of an issue when your team creates lots though, whereas it’s highlighted when you play in teams that don’t such as dyches team etc.

Will just be nice having options that we feel confident will actually get a goal

Mixed bag for him last night. He should have come away with at least 1 or 2 goals last night, and he jumped far too early for the long throw which led to our goal, if he'd timed it better he could well have cleared it.

Having said that, I thought the rest of his game was good. His back-to-goal play is improving and he's always on the shoulder of the last defender... Having the likes of Alcaraz buzzing in and around him he'll more often then not get himself a 1v1 opportunity against a lot of teams. Never stopped working and his head didn't drop.

Well this is also why DCL's "record" is even, uh, worse? I guess?
For Dyche we created a chance or so a game and he'd miss that, thus leading to dropped points. Out of form, no chances, no nothing, frustrating - yeah, it's horrible to watch but also not great for him, doubt his aim was to not score goals  Think Beto also missed a few stinkers during his limited playtime.

For Moyes we created more in the first 2 games than we did for Dyche for the last 5-6 months, so more chances means more goals (and easier to gloss over misses) - Beto and DCL both benefited from this so far, only that Beto's played more. No doubt if it was DCL up top we'd play similar but with the aim to put the ball in the box more/more often, or get him to play with his back to goal and get Alcaraz involved, as that's his strengths. Question for me is still if Beto can keep it up - I hope he can, but what if what we saw last night is more of the norm than the previous 4-5 games?

At least we've got a manager trying to win games now though so both will do until Bramley-Moore, and we can build from there.

Doubt Moyes will be keen to have him as the no1 striker next season. Games like that you have to win if you want to achieve anything and you can’t be missing 3 decent chances. At least the goals he has scored should should make sure there is someone out there who’d want to sign him.

Beto's in credit. He's been slotting for fun, so he's allowed a bad night. The difference with DCL is he doesn't slot for fun - at all anymore. So when he misses similar chances, there is no recent history of clinical finishing when put through to fall back on.

Obviously, Beto needs to bounce back now. Whether he does or doesn't will determine whether he has a genuine future here beyond the summer or whether he joins DCL on the scrapheap.
Yeah and I don't like to talk about other players to big another up. But you gotta make comparisons for perspective. Beto got into these positions 3 or 4 times in one game. And had the pace and awareness to get 1v1. Dom get one of them every other game.

Well yes, but they also have differences in playstyle - DCL hasn't done many of those runs in his career, similarly to how Beto, despite being tall, hasn't had as many headed goals or assists, can't play as well with his back to goal and his awareness in the box is often nonexistent, etc. Horses for courses, as it goes.
