It’s pertinent to note none of our current players have the ability to slip into this dream XI and yet we expect this team to finish above the teams that contained, at times, most of them.
That's true, I would say Gueye competes with Fellaini as an individual at his best though
 
Do Distin or Graveson deserve a shout?
Distin deserves a mention, definitely. Lescott at his best was better than Distin, no question: I'd go with Lescott as the left centre back in this hypothetical team.

Distin in turn was better than anyone else who played on the left side of central defence BUT was not in any way versatile, so would not necessarily get a spot on the bench

I'd agree but I really liked Weir so maybe him for Jagielka.
 
4-4-2 as a throw back, and a sort of a 4-4-1-1-
Assuming all in their prime / at their best
