He just builds them for people once they've bought their parts and gets everything up and running.

Ghost, sort yourself out with what games you want to play then browse around the web forums setup by pc gamers/modders/overclockers and get advice on brands and builds from them. Off the top of my head

What specs there were are not all top of the line now. There is a little futureproofing in there though. Cannot recommend strenuously enough how important a top of the range PSU is. Believe me, you fork out four or five hundred quid on some new components and have your £20 psu zap them dead, you will not be happy.

I want to know if I can trade in my PC laptop (less than 6 months old) for a more powerful desktop.

I'm thinking 3ghz min, but not sure if that is too much. Decent graphics, and some good hd space.

Would it be possible to hook up a base unit to my laptop and use the laptop as the monitor?

Expensive option considering how cheap screens are now. What game has fired your imagination to get a pc? And is it just a passing fad or will you do a lot of pc and online gaming to make it worth shelling out what could be sizable sums of cash? Will you use it as a home entertainment system - because if you do, welcome to the world of silencing and cooling mods.

I like playing games like Anno. God like games. Plus it's handy to have a PC in house so I can test my work (I am a web designer).

Any old pc is capable of browsing the net. Why not upgrade your mac to the latest super graphics version made for online gaming?
