I'm not against the signing. I just ask where the confience lies in this being financially sound. He could easily flop then we're paying a player £6M to stink the place out and he'd want a club to come in and match his wages...which limits him to a handful of elite euro clubs. If he flops here no PL club would pay for him at a big price and pay his wages.

If he were to leave the club after say one year then the expenses will at most have been £10m + £6.24m (52 x £120,000) equating to a total sum of £16.24m.

Now if we're being realistic, say he was a flop then I can't see him leaving for a fee as paltry as £16m and we would be expecting between £20-30m at least.

So based on those figures (it may be more) we'd be looking at a profit of between £4-14m from it, and if wages were an issue they could be subsided from that.

Therefore, we'd either be still in profit, back to square one or making a small loss (worse case scenario), which is a fair gamble for me considering our stature.

Or he could be a fairly decent to great signing where we'd be even better off.

My view on these transactions is that we should try and learn from the past: the near past of Koemageddon.

No harm in questioning these immense figures for a player who hasn';t got elite clubs snapping at his heels.

I don't really think that is all that immense in the modern PL.

Ask him to leave after that short period of time and he'd want the best part of his contract paid up. You forgot to add that in.

i get your concerns, but what other kinds of signings would you prefer? someone who's already experienced in the premier league? other good teams were tapping up bernard to see if he wanted to join them too (AC Milan, Chelsea).

when it comes to players who've played in other leagues, it's ALWAYS going to be a gamble, but when an opportunity like this arises, you kind of HAVE to throw down money. lowkey signings a la coleman are few and far between. i do still think brands will make those types of signings that we won't even bat an eye over, but you can't just expect all of them to be like that

Yes but at the time not many Evertonians were complaining, hindsight is a wonderful thing wish we all had it. And as far as I can tell Brands and Silva are trying to do that. Have you not noticed this vast player car boot sale taking place.
