According to Record, Everton were in talks to sign Sporting’s £20 million Portugal international last summer. The Toffees even negotiated a contract with Nunes, offering the 23-year-old a substantial pay rise at Goodison Park.

That was until Benitez arrived, however. He wasted no time nixing a deal Everton had spent much of the summer working on.

The Spaniard is famed for demanding control behind the scenes, including over recruitment. And Benitez was never going to readily accept a player brought in by those operating above his head.

And as Pep Guardiola exalted Matheus Nunes as ‘one of the best players in the world today’ following Manchester City’s Champions League trip to Sporting Lisbon last week, the sky hanging over Goodison Park would have turned from a gloomy grey to lightning-cracked charcoal.

Cheers Rafael

Why sign Nunes when you can sign Rondon

I am surprised the Benitez Bum Boys didn't tell us all about this. Especially those with a line to his inner thoughts.

To the people who backed this man to the hilt, during his time as manager here. You shower of idiots!

It's interesting. On social media last night, Rafael was getting abused by some Everton fans, but fans of other clubs were saying that Rafael wasn't the problem and needed more time. They all acknowledged we were better with him as manager.

He has pretty much come out of this unscathed.

And no surprise that forverblurt92 is liking all the fat man’s posts

Utter kopite

You are a joke these days son.

Your daily posts on here are broken down as follows:

50% about Benitez (who left months ago)

40% about @ForeverBlue92 (who you claim to have on egnore publically like the attention seeking Karen you are)

5% about @Saint Domingo

5% about how great LFC are (yet you call others Kopites).

A parody of a poster.

His legacy is cemented forever at the RS. The man who joined their local rivals, took said rivals piss poor team and made it even worse before getting them relegated. 'Sake man. He'll be a bigger legend to them for this then anything he ever did while he was their manager. Even if we manage to dodge the bullet he'll still be loved for doing such a good job that it went to the wire like this.
