That was a very bad night for all Evertonians but looking back now it's not all all surprising that it happened. Coleman was a young kid who'd barely played at professional level and he had Pablo Aimar running at him at all night. Must have been his nightmare come to life. I think Hibbert had to go centre-half as well because Yobo bitched out.
The main thing that stunk that night was Moyes f*cking off down the tunnel straight away after the final whistle, not bothering to go over and thank the fans for spending all that money to go over and support the side. Ungrateful arsewipe.
There were literally no wide players in that side, or our side in generally to be honest. Bit shocking that we spent years and years playing Cahill, Ossie, and Arteta amongst others as our wingers and brought nobody in bar Billy.
In a way we were sort of ahead of the curve, as the growing trend nowadays is for a striker with three attack minded midfielders behind him. Traditional wingers are a dying breed, certainly in the Premier League.

I know they all gave us a hiding but I remember Di Maria in particular giving us the run around, every time I see him mentioned for Madrid now it always reminds me of the Benfica drubbing.
Everton, with 11 players unavailable, struggled and Benfica goalkeeper Julio Cesar did not have a save to make.
Regularly outmanoeuvred in midfield and frequently embarrassed in defence, the closest Everton came to a goal was when substitute Louis Saha hit the outside of the post having been released by Jo.
Toffees manager David Moyes had not had an easy build-up for his team's trip to Lisbon's Estadio da Luz and his injury worries increased when Leighton Baines joined the list of absentees.
It meant an entire team was unavailable - nine out injured and two Cup-tied in Johnny Heitinga and Lucas Neill - so Moyes had a threadbare, inexperienced squad at his disposal.

Great trip, awful result.
Couldn't agree more. I had a ball, until the match.
Was on bed for 11 or 12 that night, totally depressed with how we played. We were turgid.
Think our current team would give that benfica side a rattle.
Reason for edit: benfica not beneficial
Sporting was deffo more depressing that Benfica.
Sporting, we were coasting easily through until Distin decided to chase that Liedson the whole length of the pitch, before whipping him up in the area like a mong, making our task a nightmare, i don't think many people expected us to go through going into it, and Moyes played a stinker, and tried to sit back on it, when they went 1-0 up, it was curtains.
:
Just as much Rodwell's fault that one. We were coasting at 2-0 with not long to go then he hits a 30 yard backward pass to a surprised Distin which he had to try and collect at waist height with a SL forward right on top of him.
