I can see a lot of similarities between Godfrey and holgate. Physically good, pacy and plenty of athleticism. These are the basic attribute to do well in this league.

I remember holgate were on similar path when he first broke into the first team, tactically naive and prone to error. He went on to become our best defender, Godfrey will likely be just as good if given proper guidance.

...no, I’m not one who thinks ‘he could do a job‘ as a DM, a RB or a specialist man-marker.

He lacks finesse, he’s just a big powerful and fast lad who likes to defend. He’s raw and he’ll make mistakes but I think he’ll ultimately make us more difficult to score against. He’s more of a Keown type than a VvD type. Personally, I see him & Keane being a partnership.

I see, i mean Keown was a fantastic man marker and also of course a no nonsense defender.

If hes a solid defender after bedding in thats good enough for me...he has the attributes.

Id definitely go with Godfrey and Holgate as the ideal pairing on paper.

It would allow us to play higher up the pitch...Keane in for either when we face giant brutes.

Keane is our most inform defender

the question is who partners him

holgate - we got murdered by man utd with the crosses but it was hit first game back

mina - looked solid at first but crumbling faster than a cadbury flake

godfrey - haven't really seen them as a duo yet

branthwaite - looked solid at the end of last season as a pairing

...I’m not a fan of Keane, indeed I’m a critic but I entirely agree with your post. Keane‘s form has been decent and it’s a matter of who is the best partner for him. I think that will be Godfrey.

Give the lad time, let's not forget our best centre half in my 29 years of being a blue struggled when he first arrived and was asked to fill in for a number of positions
(Yes I am rating jags as the best central defender I've personally seen play for us)

Hey guys, Norwich City fan here. Sorry to crash your forum, but I was just reading through this thread to see what your impressions were of Godfrey and felt like I had to clarify some points.

As I said what concerns me is he was objectively bad last year. It isn't unheard of for a player to be bad at first in the PL and then turn out very good later, but I wouldn't say it is the norm either.

This just quite simply is not true. Godfrey was one of the only bright sparks in a very poor season for us last year. The fact we conceded so many goals was not down to him at all, more down to the system and tactics we employed than individual players. We also had a massive injury crisis at centre back last year, meaning we were normally pairing Godfrey with midfielders like Amadou or Tettey because we had no-one else to play there, so often he would not only have to be focusing on his own position, but constantly looking over at his partner and telling him what to do, when he was only 21 years old. Even when we did get defenders back fit, he didn't have a consistent partner all season, and post-lockdown only had Klose as a partner who was an old, slow liability.

Godfrey was guilty of the odd error, as you'd expect from any young defender in their first season in the Premier League, but all in all he was one of our better performers. To say he was 'objectively bad' is just plain wrong and you won't find a single Norwich fan who agrees with that. In the main he was completely solid last year, and often felt like he was on a one-man mission to stop the opposition from scoring. Plus, he was an absolute beast in our promotion season.

If he gets a run of games at centre back I don't have any doubt he'll prove how good a defender he is. He's still young and does still need to improve some aspects of his game, but under a great coach like Ancelotti you'd think he's in a good place to do that. He's got great pace, strength, is good in the air considering he's not the tallest for a defender, and his reading of the game and ability to make last-ditch blocks is superb. I really look forward to seeing how he'll develop under you lot!

£25m and you didn’t even use a gun. Great business by your lads!

II'll take your word for it but my admittedly limited viewing I did not see it the same
