Beer, revisited

Found a set of Sam Adams Imperial Series tonight, so I grabbed a few to sample. As Sam is my favorite American brand, there isn't much they sell that I don't like (probably a bit biased). Tonight's sampling was the Wee Heavy, a Scottish Ale type. I'm not very familiar with Scottish Ales, but this seemed pretty good.

Next up are the Double Bock and Imperial White.

Please don't take me the wrong way now but.......I'm a lager man myself.....it's all I drink usually...... Now, I've never been to America ... And it sounds ace .... But... Do they do good lager over there ?

Answers will vary depending upon where in the country you would be going. All the good breweries are smaller, so distribution isn't necessarily country-wide. I do know a couple western breweries have/are opening plants in North Carolina.

As for lager, I prefer Pale Ales/IPAs (American style), but got horribly spoiled after a trip to Munich. When I want a lager, I'll go find German/Austrian.

Germans are great at following a strict set of rules. Simple product which tastes fantastic.

Americans are at their best taking what other people do and going batspit crazy overboard with it. Results are a total mixed bag based upon taste.

With lagers, I prefer the "safe" approach and when in the mood just get Hacker-Pschorr.

Kurt, if you're in the States you need to grab a Sam Adams Boston Lager. That's my vote for "America's Beer," although I suppose it's a German/Austrian-style lager. They have a Boston Ale too, which is an English style brew, but I don't like it as much. Although there are many true American styles, most American beer is hop-heavy, a reaction to years of the Bud-Coors-Miller dominance of crap beers, so if you like hops and IBUs you're in luck. But there are quite a few breweries producing great styles from all over the world and doing a decent job, even if with an American twist, so have no fear for lack of quality.

I'm in to wheat beers, and I usually drink the home city beer. There's so many craft beers to choose from in the US it's amazing.

I was actually in Schlafly's brewery a few weeks back - tried the Oktoberfest (very nice brew), and they did a pilsner called Kolch (I think), that was awesome as well. We then went to the anheiser Busch brewery, and that was ****e - so commercial and mass produced that most beers tasted the same....Viva Schlafly's!

Kolsch is it's own style; come from Cologne and is usually a little fresher, less bitter than your usual German lager.

In Germany at the moment and every beer that passes my lips is quality. At home normally stick to a small local brewery near were i live called Welbeck abbey brewery.

Bah. When in Munich earlier this year even Maß size didn't stick 'round long enough to grow warm, let alone stale...
