Beer, revisited

Had a fantastic beer and a really good beer last night.

Founders Breakfast Stout, just fantastic.

Then went next door and had Hardywood Gingerbread Stout.

The Gingerbread Stout was really quite good, just...missing something that would have made it epic imo.

regarding Heller...

Did NOT like it. Smelled like a side of beef rolled in dirt. Style was just not for me. Some of my other beergeek friends gave me grief for it, but hey, I enjoy some of the hopped up double IPA's they find intolerable. Different strokes for different folks.

Was down in Cornwall a couple of weeks back, we stayed in St. Austell and called in at the brewery. Picked up a few of the lesser spotted including this:

Cornish Bock, lovely 6.2 % rich lager. Similar to some of the great American craft ales I've had. Very good.

Yeah it's very smoky and dark, but with a cloudy wheat beer style, doesn't do it for me at all. The first one we tried from them was a very lightly smoked lager, that was really nice. We've picked up their Maerzen dark
smoked beer as well, got a feeling I'm not gonna be too keen on that either.
Can't find much info on the brewery, looks like a really small traditional place.

@wm02 used to live nearby, he might have the goods on it.
Yeah, when I lived in Bamberg I always heard of the place as Schlenkerla (that's in the Gothic script). It's one of nine breweries in Bamberg (smaller city in Oberfranken).Actually, my wife had a friend who imported their beer to Canada and the two of them had a private tour of the brewery and inn-style
restaurant. Nothing quite like their beer vom Fass (on tap). At that time, the

managing partner was quite young and really wanted to get their beer throughout North America. Find the Rauchbier at Whole Foods in Virginia. I think their last name was Heller. Just a coincidence

Having a hard time with beer at the moment! Prices of imports has risen stupidly the past few months, and I`ve been stung and had so many drain pours, that I`m just getting fed up and now I`m back to drinking wine. A basic imported 6 pack is around $22.00, and a 650ml is about $12 to $14; for a few dollars more, I can get a good Cotes de Rhone or Tempranillo! The local brewers don`t really do stuff I like, so they don`t help much, and their pricing is almost as much as imports.

Yikes!

Can you believe there is no year round stout or porter in Edmonton??!!??

Where there's a problem, there's a solution.
