I was wondering over the past 12 months where this new and improved Landon Donovan came from. I finally got my answer.

Donovan launches book blast at Beckham

July 2, 2009

David Beckham has come under attack from L.A. Galaxy team-mate Landon Donovan just as he prepares to return for action with the MLS team.

In a new book due out later this month, Donovan claims Beckham has demonstrated little commitment to the Galaxy cause and has been a negative influence on the team since the ousting of former coach Ruud Gullit.
"All that we care about at a minimum is that he committed himself to us," Donovan says in 'The Beckham Experiment', authored by Sports Illustrated writer Grant Wahl.
"As time has gone on, that has not proven to be the case in many ways - on the field, off the field.
"Does the fact that he earns that much more money come into it? Yeah. If someone's paying you more than anybody in the league, more than double anybody in the league, the least we expect is that you show up to every game, whether you are suspended or not. Show up and train hard, show up and play hard."
Donovan, who is the United States captain and wears the Galaxy armband in Beckham's absence, also questioned the former England skipper's leadership abilities, claiming he is too often silent in team meetings.
"Maybe he's not a leader, maybe he's not a captain," he said. "Fair enough. But at a minimum, you should bust your ass every day. That hasn't happened. And I don't think that's too much for us to expect. Especially when he's brought all this on us."
Beckham's first season in MLS was a largely miserable experience. He struggled with injury as an unbalanced Galaxy team struggled all year and missed out on the play-offs, with Gullit quitting before the end of the campaign.
Gullit's departure, which came a little over a month after Beckham's Galaxy debut, is the moment Donovan believes the light went out for the club's marquee player.
"When David first came, I believed he was committed to what he was doing," Donovan said. "He cared. He wanted to do well. He wanted the team and the league to do well.
"Somewhere along the way - and in my mind it coincides with Ruud being let go - he just flipped a switch and said, 'Uh-huh, I'm not doing it anymore'."
Donovan even claimed Beckham is a bad team-mate, because of his lack of commitment.
"He's not shown (he's a good team-mate)," he said. "I can't think of another guy where I'd say he wasn't a good team-mate, he didn't give everything through all this, he didn't still care. But with (Beckham), I'd say no, he wasn't committed."
Beckham pushed for a loan move to AC Milan in January, and then extended it to the point that he missed half of the 2009 MLS season. That served as evidence that he does not care for the league, according to Donovan, who gave up his chance to play in Europe early in his career in order to stay at home.
"My sense is that David's clearly frustrated, that he's unhappy and, honestly, that he thinks it's a joke," he said. "I also kind of feel (he has taken the team) for granted. I don't see dedication or commitment to this team, and that's troubling."
Beckham is due to make his return for the Galaxy against the New York Red Bulls on July 16, two days after Wahl's book is due to be published.
He will line up alongside Donovan in that game, but the striker does not want that to be the case for much longer.
"Let's say he does stay here for three more years," Donovan said. "I'm not going to spend the next three years of my life doing it this way. This is f****** miserable. I don't want to have soccer be this way."

I always thought that Landon needed a Moyes or SAF type manager to kick him in the ass. Turns out all he needed was to be exposed to someone who was a talented as he was but so utterly retched and unprofessional and that even Landon had to recoil in disgust and tell himself that "I'm not like that" Becks, savior of US footie!!

Wahl is a great writer, have heard snippets what's in his book, it sounds great.

As much as I hate Beckham, Donovan always came across to me as an arrogant little so and so, with very little reason.

I don't know anything about how much effort Beckham puts in or how good a teammate he is, but isn't this the same Landan Donovan who played for Bayer Leverkusen?

This Donovan wishes he had 2% of Beckhams talent.

Hes just jealous because hes earning a fat wage. Thats all really. American in ego shocker.

Yes but when Landon Donovan has to call you out that's saying something. I would say that Becks just mailed it in on the Galaxy but that would give him too much credit. Becks wasn't even one of the 20 best players in the MLS.

I was one of Landon's biggest critics and after 06 I even wanted him booted of the national team but over the past 12 months he's turned over a new leaf. He doesn't shy away from physical contact and gets right back up w/ no whining after a foul. He also got a raw deal over at Munich, he was pretty good there. He only got 3 months there and never played the same position in back to back games.

Frankly, Donovan is too good for a team like Bayer Leverkusen right now.

He even admits he wasn't ready to play in Europe when he went over years ago but much has changed since then.

I don't get the backlash - Donovan's totally right.

Beckham went to the US on the pretense that he was going to do something there - and didn't.

"I'm coming there to make a difference."

Signed July 07, and was playing for Milan by Jan 08. By March he was seeking a permanent move to Milan.

What kind of commitment is that? It doesn't scream committed, does it?

I'm not saying I blame him for not wanting to be in the MLS - MLS is football in slow motion. But if you commit yourself to the task, be prepared to follow through, no? Or maybe you should try fully understanding what you're about to do before agreeing to do it.

Becks is desperate for the England caps record. Under Capello he knows he needs to be playing at a high level to be considered and doesn't think he will get that at Galaxy.

Very poor forward planning to even consider going to the States imo. He was purely trying to exploit the US market, with Posh trying to get into the pop/wag/tv business on the back of it. It was always going to end in tears..

Maybe so, I haven't seen enough of him to form a fair opinion of his ability, but I think the comment about him giving up his chance to play in Europe in order to stay at home is a stupid 1 considering he left home to do that very thing

Yeah, I think his missus had something to with it. But I get where Donovan is coming from. Becks got paid a lot of money, and it has been clear that he wants to come back to Europe. I think LA deserved a bit more from him.

It shows commitment to play for his country which i for one admire as a englishman and he is doing everything possible to remain in the england set up. Now when he went to the states mcClaren was the england manager and made it clear he was not in his plans. This is why i think beckham decided to go to the states. however as things progressed he got back in the madrid team under capello after capello has previously said he would never play for madrid again. And mcclaren was sacked and then beckham went to the US as he had already signed his contract in Jan so he could not get out of it. all the guy is doing is doing what he must do to play for England. As for Donovan he just want to sell his new book (the beckham experiance) and is using beckhams name as he is not big enough name to do it.

He signed for the US because he was benched at Madrid and the only teams that were semi interested were clubs like Spurs. After getting back in the side and playing well he didn't want anything to do with it.

If Beckham wants to play for Milan soooo bad why doesn't he buy himself out? MLS was only asking 15M US and Milan would have chipped in, he would have had to pay what 5-7M?

Donovan gets nothing from the book, its not his book.

The thing that makes me laugh is, hes having a go at Beckham for basically fooking off to Milan, when he himself went to Munich.

Ive watched MLS, I can see why Beckham cant be bothered trying to play, ive seen better conference games. Its a terrible league.
