BBC taking advertising

Nebbiolo

Valuation: £108 million
Just noticed on their news website that BBC is now accepting advertising:

BBC NEWS | News Front Page

That's a bit sneaky for a public broadcaster funded by central government (i.e. by the taxpayer). Maybe if the corporation didn't pay Johnathan Ross and the like £6m a year it would not need to take this route.

I wonder how long before it takes limited advertising during peak TV hours?

Before I left the UK I think I paid £130. I wasn't happy considering I only really watched MOTD and Question Time.

advertising has been on the bbc website for about a year now for overseas users. it is really annoying.

Ah, that would explain why I've got big ads on it. Given that we're not paying a fee then I suppose I'm okay with that. Sorry BBC, looks like I jumped in without checking the facts fully. (y)

Still think you shouldn't be paying presenters £6m a year, though. (n)

i don't see any ads on the page, and i'm an overseas user (not paying taxes to support the program), so i of all people definitely should.

unless there are ads there, and i just don't notice them, which i guess makes me the ideal advertising target.

They're slowly sucking you in with their subliminal messages

Just rechecked the site and now I have no ads. Before I has some crap about cruising in Jamaica or somewhere similar.

I much prefer Newsnight to Question Time myself. There's some pretty good stuff on the BBC, but I do think that the licence fee is too expensive.

Also, I don't see any advertising? Perhaps it's only on the International version? Though admittedly, I don't see ads anywhere because of a nice Firefox add-on called Ad-Block Plus.

I've got a theory on Question Time. And it is this: ban the audience from clapping or whooping at anything a politician or member of the panel says. It encourages spin and rhetoric and rarely reflects the content of what is said. I'm sick of listening to quick smug replies to complex problems and, worse, to the audience applauding like God has just spoken.
