No evidence for this whatsoever. Our record without Barry is brilliant.

Besic was in the team playing well, far better than barry, developing with more games, then got dropped as soon as the gaffers bum boys were available, you can only present competition if the guy making the calls is even just a little bit open to the idea. I know you judge players based on servitude over ability, but even for you this is a trange statement

I think a manager would think twice from upsetting the team balance by dropping one of his regulars. He would only do that if he was absolutely sure Besic was ready and he obviously doesn't think he is.

However if he was starting the job I think there's a good chance he would start Besic over Barry.

I think that's what people mean when they talk about favourites. Barry was poor against Spurs but has been good up to then so I doubt that one game will have changed Martinez's mind however if he has another poor game against Chelsea then I think he would be making a mistake not playing Besic in the next game.

Oh dear a triumvirate of the dull and ill informed...

kind of proves my point I'd say.

Yes, sorry. I misunderstood what you were saying.

He's been better than McCarthy. I have a feeling Jimmy has been carrying that knock we heard about for a while though. He's not been himself. He's been anonymous, which is not something that can normally be said of him, even if he has a bad game.

Barry is important to us though.

I wouldn't argue about McCarthy he's been awful, Barry of 2 years ago was vital, but his legs have gone mate, I think he's rapidly becoming a dead leg liability tbh.

I'm not sure 'legs' are all that important in the role Barry plays. Not with his nous. I think he still has a big part to play. In this system, he needs a dynamic partner though. The system will look better when Jimmy gets his mojo back.

I think it's the way Roberto wants to set his team up and why he didn't buy a 'number 10'. Barry covers towards the left and McCarthy the right with wingers either side of Rom and Ross roaming about. I just wish he'd push McCarthy further forward and have Barry cover across the back 4 especially at home against the lesser sides. He did it for a few games towards the back end of last season and it seemed to work but McCarthy has dropped back again this season.

McCarthy should be as deep as possible, he isn't a creative player. We need him legging it around harassing attacking midfielders.

We effectively have two identical midfielders taking 2 positions who could play 1 role, McCarthy alongside Barkley and Cleverly in a slightly advanced 433 suits him down to the ground. People are hitting McCarthy for not creating, but that aint his game at all, similar to Galloway not being a LB and Ross a LM.

It's actually much more attacking than a lot of people think. The centre mids, and the two centre halves, are generally the only players not given licence to attack, and even Stones has the licence to bring the ball out of defence.

Could you imagine Moyes playing a system like that?

Moyes used to play only 1 DM.

Why do people have to bring Moyes into things, tut tut.

Forever in Moyes shadow.

I was being ironic. I was a Moyes man.

I do believe that Martinez has changed our mentality though.

at least you're steadfast though Goat, there's people on here who have, consistently, over the years, criticised Moyes for being boring and ugly, and they're still not happy.....

It's an interesting question. Obviously if more defence work needed they should play together. I see the 'attacking threat' differently: they both can go forward but Barry isn't fast enough and McCarthy isn't good enough to track back in time. At the beginning of last season Barry + Besic looked awful together but then they got used to each other and had good games together in late spring. Besic + McCarthy doesn't and won't work that well ever because Besic can play his best when a technically good player is playing beside him. Barry is one, McCarthy isn't however I love his workrate. It doesn't really matter if it's a more attacking minded mid (like Barkley or Pjanic in the NT) or someone like Barry who can be slow now but has skills. But You all know that if gets full fintess (playing today against Andorra can do the trick) Martinez will play all three of them against Chelsea.....

Barry is very similar to Gerrard last year. On the ball still a very good player and a leader however too slow now for the premier league especially in games that require us to play with a high line.

The best midfield partnership is Besic and Barkley. They both compliment each other perfectly. Besic and Cleverly would also work quite well. McCarthy and Barkley work well too. I would probably agree that Besic and McCarthy don't look like they will work however Besic has never been played further back when they have played that partnership so I think it is too early to judge especially since these things normally do require time.

Barry is one of the weakest links in our team IMO. As time goes on he will become more and more Phil Neville. When experience and leadership are touted as your best qualities then your days are numbered. Besic is a perfect replacement for him though.

We are also missing baines a lot. The idea of having 2 DM's is fine when baines is being boss but without him it doesn't seem worth it.

I have voted no on this

But in some respects I can see why RM continues to play him, and for me it is simply about having experience in the team

We have a pretty young team out there and a very week captain to lead them, Barry does a fair amount of organising and is one of the few players willing to receive the ball no matter where he is on the park

I do believe we will see more of Besic, but at the moment it is Barry to continue
