Problem is when you throw Barkley into the mix, it inevitably means Rom is isolated.

Play Ross deeper alongside McCarthy, and give Rom a strike partner.

Lukaku wasn't isolated against Barnsley in the second half was he? Ross came on and gave him forward balls from deep for him to run onto. When Ross is deep he gives the wingers and Lukaku the type of balls they want. When he's at number 10 he can't, he gets isolated upfront waiting for one of Barry or McCarthy to play forward which they rarely do.

As a pairing they're no better than Carsley and Neville.

Least they could keep the door shut and played with a bit of passion. McCarthy and Barry are the most boring pairing I've seen in years. McCarthy has even stopped putting tackles in. The pair of them just run around chasing the ball not getting near anyone and then put the stadium to sleep with their possession training drill when they do get the ball.

Exactly.

Naismith right up front alongside Rom plus 2 wingers (Mirallas and Delboy) gave us so many options going forward.

Ross is better in that deeper role.

Lets call a spade a spade though, he was poor against spurs, if that level of form where to continue, i dont think it will, but if he did he should not be deemed undroppable, we have some very talented cm's the competition is there if them to push each other, a top manager would take advantage of that situation and use it

He was worse than his level against Spurs for 90% of last season and didn't get dropped once even with Besic Osman and Barkley at times sitting on the bench. Even when Gibson got fit he had to play number 10 to keep Barry in the side. Barry was playing three games a week at 34 and our performances stank but Martinez never dropped him. Fortunately he got suspended enough times for us to win a couple and avoid relegation. Roberto has a massive massive blind spot about this pairing. Playing them with the likes of Naismith and Etoo on the wings last season was absolutely suicidal, any mug could see what was coming just looking at the team sheet yet he did it match after match after match.

There have been many times when McCarthy has played worse than Barry but naturally Barry is the one who's slaughtered by the fans.

This mentality does my head in. As if people are targetting Barry for abuse because they don't like him personally for whatever reason. It's nothing to do with that. We clearly play better, more attractive football without him in the team. He is undroppable though, for some bizarre reason

McCarthy in all honesty needs a bit of a rocket up his backside, to fulfil his potential he needs to add a lot more urgency to his game.

Often instead of looking up and playing a quick ball forward, he'll take a few touches and then play a languid obvious pass as if he's having a kickabout in the park. Needs to sharpen up.

And track runners !!

?? how the hell can you say it offers nothing going forward or creatively? It allows our LB and RB to be attacking options. Somebody has to cover their positions when they bomb forward or else there'd be acres of space and we'd be undone every time by a long simple hoof up the pitch.

Its great for them to 'bomb forward' if there is an end product but to date hardly a decent cross in to the box or penetrative pass makes them 'bomb forward' a waste of energy.

I'd happily start Barry and McCarthy on Saturday against Chelsea. (Which is handy as that is what it will be).

It's games at home to the likes of Watford, Sunderland and so on where it does my absolute head in.

Chelsea's biggest weakness is Fabregas' lack of defending, and their full backs who have started poorly. We will however put out a midfield where only one player Barkley (if he can get the ball) will go beyond Fabregas and the other two will not be able to provide the right passes that the wingers (presuming we play any) need to trouble their full backs.

Just like City did, Mourinho will put Matic on Barkley like Fernandinho dos and he will know that he has completely shut down our attacking power. He'll also know that Fabregas will be as free as a bird to orchestrate how he wants (like Toure was) because Barry and McCarthy will be sat 20 yards off him trying to cover Willian. With Costa and the CBs that makes 4 Everton players marking two Chelsea ones and freedom galore for the wingers and creative midfielders of the opposition to run riot which is exactly what happened v City.

If we play Barry and McCarthy we'll be the first side this season not to even give Chelsea a game.

You hate Barry though.

You hate Barry though.

True, but doesn't make what I said any less true. Barry is conscious he has lost his pace so sits deep so he's not exposed. He can't pressure the ball. You can give poor midfield a like Southampton that sort of space but if you give it to top midfielders they will punish you as we saw against City and Chelsea last season, what was it the first minute of the game Fabregas got it completely unopposed and slotted Costa in? Every other team has bullied him out of the game this season, I would bet a lot that we are the team who let him get back into form.
