My point regarding my reply to Chico was this:
I am not "backing" Clattenberg in any way, shape, or form for his performance last Saturday. He should get a lengthy suspension, no doubt about it.
(By the way, how come no one has mentioned the linesmen as well? I would figure that they'd have some culpability.)
However Monty, I believe that a lifetime ban that this petition is asking for is not only unwarranted, it's is foolhardy to boot and that is why I chose not to sign it. If it had asked for something REASONABLE, like say a month long suspension from refeering in the Premier League, then I'd sign it in a flash.
But to say that someone should be banned for life for the mistakes that they made in a match is just plain stupid and frankly over the top. It also makes us look like we're overreacting to a situation.
Now, if it can be proven that he was on the take, that the match was rigged, or anything to that effect, well then of course he should be banned for life. That really goes without saying.
If we start asking for referees to be banned for life, where does it stop? Who decides what mistakes should just be punished by a suspension, and what mistakes should be punished by a lifetime ban from refereeing?
How many quality referees will be banned for life because of one shocker? Hell, the players can have shockers from time to time, why can't referees? Furthermore, banning a ref for life for having a bad match could have serious consequences in the future. A referee could easily make a call or not make a call knowing that there could be serious consequences if he gets it wrong. So rather than potentially make a mistake with a call, they might overlook an absolutely warranted call, and vice versa. It would be a very bad precedent indeed.
Players get yellow card accumulations before they have to sit out a match. Why can't referees get "poor call or missed call" accumulations and miss a match or two? Just wondering?
I understand passionate Evertonians are upset and frustrated. I know, I'm one of them.
If passionate Evertonians are "enraged" by my opinion, that's their problem, not mine.
But asking for a lifetime ban against a referee who has been for the most part, a consistently good referee just makes no sense at all.
