Back in the 1940's in Liverpool, a common term for someone who was a bit 'slow' was 'a head the ball'. So the dangers were well known then.
Back in the 1950's, I played a Yorkshire League game against a team in Sheffield. There was an exceptionally strong wind blowing down the pitch and we were playing against it. The opposition goalie was dropping his kicks from hand on the edge of our penalty area. The ball was like concrete. I was centre-half and me and the centre-forward were trying our hardest to let the other win the headers!lolHa ha, I’ve heard that phrase so many times but never really thought about where it might come from. It all makes sense now. I remember when I was at school and used to get a regular rollicking of our Manager for not contesting headers dropping out of the sky from kicks out of Gk hands, if you managed to catch it on your forehead it wasn’t that bad, but if it caught you on the top of your head. It hurt, really hurt. So never used to bother.
I don't think the official weight of the ball has changed for many years, nor the pressure it is inflated to.

Bet there's very few on here who could say the same for themselves....I don't think the official weight of the ball has changed for many years, nor the pressure it is inflated to.
They'd maybe check the pressure by pushing two thumbs in it when you gave it to them, but never the weight.Never knew a referee who checked either before a game.

My God yes. Bouncy but hard as well. Like Barbara Windsor.
Orange Wembley trophy was the ball I remember most from being a kid had a white one as well I think it wasn't leather but wasn't a fly away either great ball for in the street
We always found if you dident pump it up to much it was a boss ball but then again maybe it hit me on the head to many timesThat orange Wembley Trophy one stung like crazy if it smacked you on the bare legs. You had to brave or stupid to block a shot when that was flying at you from close range. Remember it being worse when it was cold or wet weather too? Was like heading a brick.
