Mr. Johnny Lennon

Player Valuation: £225k
Hey all,

I'm sorta new to this whole football thing, as in I know all the basics but not too in depth. Proceeding onwards, can someone tell him why putting Baines at left midfield would be bad? Is it because of Bilyaletdinov of am I missing a crucial fact that would make him a bad winger?

Cheers,
Chris

I just felt like he was getting caught out of position too frequently and getting upfield...unless that's what a fullback is supposed to do...

Left and Right backs can go forward a lot as long as they can back to defend. Usually when they go upfield someone will cover for them. Its centre backs that you dont want to go upfield.

i don't think baines gets caught upfield too much, and we have solid centre backs.

part of baines' strength is that he's very good at breaking down the left flank, and receiving the ball from midfielders. This provides him lots of space to run, and gives him a better opportunity to get away from his defender because they'll be tied up covering the left winger. to be honest, he would be a great left winger as well, but at the moment he's playing the top of his game so there's really no need to upset that.

i had posted a thread suggesting the same thing a couple years ago, but since we have people who can play okay in left midfield, i don't think we need to resort to that (plus this was when we had valente for cover)

No, watch the Chelsea game, most of the times he tries to purposefully beat a man he can't do it.

He works as a left back because he bombs on like Speedy Gonzales on the overlap, which still to this day takes teams by surprise.

Oh! and he can defend.

Maybe we can have Baines to play both positions , left back and winger.. that would give us an extra man to put somewhere else.

I have tried this with playing the sax and playing double bass simultaneously , I ended up blowing the double bass and picking the sax..Bad times.

BUT...

Baines is superman. He can do the job of two men with his eyes closed.

...............Jazzmzn......................

maybe when the Yak gets back we could put him in goal and he won't have to run too much, not that he does anyway ;)

on top of that we don't have another left back as cover.

We have Neville & Heitinga, Hibbert has played there too, but that would be awful.

We used to be a hotbed for left backs, remember those glory days of having Neville, Naysmith, Lescott, Pistone AND Valente! Phwoar!

i feel the only way this would work is if we were to use baines and coleman as wing backs in a 5-3-2/3-5-2 formation

something along those lines.

would never happen though, moyesy enjoys his 4-4-1-1 far too much and i'm not sure if this set up would suit the english premier

I recall he played there once or twice in his first season here when Lescott (I think) was playing LB. Bainesy looked totally lost positionally, probably the worst he's ever played for us. Then again, his first season here wasn't the Leighton we have today.
