Mikel Arteta, who had been the best player on the pich in the first-half as Everton out-played Arsenal at Goodison, was sent off sin a game Arsenal ultimately won 4-1 to go back on top of the Premier League.
Arteta was shown a straight red card after his elbow caught Fabregas in the face as the pair contested possession in midfield.
Fabregas made a meal of the apparent damage to his cheek, but Arteta refused to blame his opponent for his fate, insisting instead that Atkinson had misinterpreted the sort of incident that occurs frequently in matches.
Arteta said: “I don’t blame Fabregas for a mad decision by the referee. He tried to get an advantage for his team, and that’s normal.
“I can’t think of a game where I haven’t done that before, raised my arm a little to stop a player making a tackle.
“It is the same for many players and the refs do not produce cards.
“But this one said to me ‘you did the same thing a few minutes ago — now you’re off’. It was stupid. It was a s*** decision.
“It’s not like I tried to kick someone or deliberately elbow someone in the face. I’d never do that, especially to a good friend like Fabregas. There were fouls and dives he did nothing about, but for this he gets out the red card.
“You expect referees to allow some contact, especially in England but if I was guilty of a bad foul I’d be the first to say sorry.”

I am with you on this one Arteta, can't believe the referee decision!

Oh, is he really your friend? don't think he is your true friend may be you guys only drinking buddy?

If he was a true friend at least he did come out and say I think it was an accidental contact, but I felt a slight pain and so I went down to avoid 2nd impact, but the pain didn't leave straight away after I gone to the ground, I am sure my friend Arteta has no intention or aware there was going to be contact.

Not like Fabregas has form or anything. It's not good when you make Arjen Robben look like a bigger man than you.

That was a nice touch from Fabregas in that last vid Bruce, kick your own ankle. Must of hurt.

arteta was pushing his luck.
if cesc wasnt such a short arse though, it would have been an elbow to the chest and no card, but arteta fell for it and gave him the excuse to go down.

personally i would like to see mikel spend his enforced absence re-learning how to take free-kicks and corners!:dodgy:

TO be honest I am a little disappointed with Arteta putting all the blame on the ref yes it was a [Poor language removed] decision but how can he absolve the cheating mate of his I hate all this cheating and diving but according to Arteta a guy I consider it worth the entrance fee to watch its alright to try and gain an unfair advantage this to me is not the Everton way but then I still think the batsman in cricket should walk if they know there out maybe I'm just a fossil

A fossil? Hell no, just a welcome throw back to when there was sportmanship, and not gamesmanship in our game.

just watched a program on the box comparing footy from 1957 to 2007 that my ma had recorded for me over the holidays.

to see arteta get a red for that and see the united goalie get a fractured cheekbone in a 'fair challenge' and be told to get on with it.

footy has changed. players get sent off for very little these days.

like moyes we should just get on with it. it will happen to another player in another team next week.

Daft isn't it. I don't mind a bit of rough and tumble. I could even forgive a bit of fisty cuffs. Look at Dyer and Bowyer for instance, it was handbags stuff and I doubt either were seriously hurt. Tell them to stop being tarts, give them ten minutes to cool off or something and get on with it.

Someone jumping in two footed and trying to break a leg on the other hand has no place whatever era we're playing in. We're in danger of treating the players like infants rather than grown adults. Rugby games are wonderful to watch because the refs are nearly always miked up so you can hear how they interact with the players and they talk to them as adults most of the time. How much more sensible would it have been for the ref to say to Arteta "look lad, I know you're probably frustrated but watch where you're putting your arm in future", give him a yellow card and get on with the game.

was it even a yellow?

bolton, and kevin davies in particular get away with real elbow attacks every game, he smashed pogatetz up at boro last season and didnt even get a booking.

arteta is taller than cesc, so does cescs arms accross artetas chest warrant a yellow?

are we trying to breed a game that only pygmies can play.

had it been a shearer or leonardo WC94 elbow smash then i'd happily say throw the book at him, but a red for that, after the so called referee bottled a career threatener by bendtner is just insanity.

I can only assume that due to Fabregas rolling around on the floor the ref had to assume that Artetsa elbow to the face was intentional rather than accidental so if thats the case he was right to send him off.

Without Fabrages' antics [Poor language removed] all would of happened.
