The fact we've never replaced him is heartbreaking but replacing the player he was at his pomp was always going to be rather difficult.

Anyone who even has a go at it would have their confidence knocked. The treatment of Osman, Ross, Besic, Davies from some parts of the fan base has been shocking. The uncomfortable truth is that the fans who allowed young Pienaar and Arteta the time to settle in and flourish wouldn’t give them more than a game or two now.

Goes to show what a decent player he was; given that he was arguably on the decline when he left us, yet still was a first-team player for a top four club for the next several years.

..nobody complains when we pick up players who want to leave other clubs, yet anybody who want to leave The Toffees is called a traitor. The move to Arsenal was a fantastic opportunity for a player we bought for very little and who gave great service over a lengthy period.

If there’s any criticism, it’s in his actions after he left but I don’t hold ill feelings for any players who leave, not even Barkley. It doesn’t really matter that much.

Interesting listening to him talk about his move to Arsenal. He forgot to mention he handed in a transfer request with just a few hours left in the transfer window; meaning we had no time to get in a replacement. I don’t resent him for moving to Arsenal - he’s right, he had given us seven years’ excellent service, and Everton was then a club standing still - it was how he went about it.

We had no money to get a replacement, even Moyes admitted that a few months later.
